Mon Mar 13, 2006 7:21 pm Most Admired and Respected Politicians |
|
Okay, so maybe it's an oxymoron, but what politicians of the 20th and 21st centuries do you really, truly admire and respect?
Here are a few of mine:
Ronald Reagan - A great leader, full of great quotes, a great man, a great President, a firm capitalist, unwavering, always honest, was responsible for ending the Cold War and causing the fall of the Soviet Union, instigated the deconstruction of the Berlin Wall...the list goes on and on.
George W. Bush - A great leader, a great President, an unwavering man, the right man in the right place at the right time, a strong supporter of freedom, says what he means and means what he says, and a bunch of other things.
Tom Tancredo, Congressman from Colorado - My Congressman, he's a good man, a nice guy (I should know--I've met him twice ), stands up for what he believes in, and when he says something he sticks with it, no matter what the criticism. He fights for what he believes is right, no matter the consequences.
Winston Churchill - A great man who led his country to victory at the right time.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman - A Democrat, yes, but a good one. He's right on most national security issues and is not afraid to step away from his party when he feels it right. For instance, on Iraq almost all his fellow Democrats are opposed to the war and have changed their opinions, etc. Lieberman's been steadfast in showing his support for the President and the conflict and the force of freedom, despite all the criticism over it from his party. I would actually be okay with a Lieberman presidency, and would very much like him to replace my Democratic Senator.
Sen. John McCain - I disagree with him quite often and wouldn't really like to see him as President, but you have to respect and admire Senator McCain for all the good he's done for this country, from Vietnam to his current service as Senator--especially in Vietnam. All the stuff he did during that war, what with being imprisoned and all...And, although I disagree with him on it usually, he's not afraid to step away from his party when he feels it necessary, which shows you something about him.
Rudy Guiliani - Okay, so he cheated on his wife. Yeah, that's not a good thing. But that aside, he was a fantastic leader after 9/11. He showed the courage and strength NY City needed in a mayor at the time. He's a good man with a good heart and, although he's liberal on social issues, stands up for what's right, or what he believes is right. He's a good man who is, IMO, most definitely respectable and admirable.

Ronald Reagan - He was responsible for ending the U.S.S.R reign of power and the fall of the Berlin Wall. (btw David Hasselhoff had nothing to do with the fall of the Berlin wall even though the Germans love him to death )
William J. Clinton - Even though many people think he isnt that good of a President... he was actually in my opinion one of the greatest Presidents of the United States. He was one of the President that sent peacekeeping troops to Serbia/Bosnia Region, Somalia, and other regions in Africa. He has also made many contribution to African famine and Aids issues by donation millions of dollars. Him and Bush Senior were also really great when they helped out the Hurricane Katrina victims by asking for millions in Donations.
Winston Churchill - One of the greatest leader of the World War II Era.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt - His will and determination to stop Nazi Germany was one of his strongest as President.
The Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger - He is a great Governor who listens to the people and understands many of the issues facing California. He is also quick to change certain laws that he may have passed that posses a problem for the state. He does however needs a bit of help in negiotiating with the many anti-law people who thinks all of his bills will ruin the state.
Nelson Mandela - One of the nicest President ever in South Africa's history. Also a man who survived the Apartheid problems in South Africa.
I can't think of anymore...

Clement Atlee- made Britain great. Created the NHS, nationalised a lot of services, and created the welfare state.
George Galloway- sticks solidly to his opinions, and won't budge under pressure. Isn't afraid to say what he thinks and he was against Saddam Hussein in the 80s- when he had the support of the USA and the UK.
Can't think of any more at the moment, but will post more when I do.

Josip Broz Tito - President of the former communist republic of Yugoslavia. Liberated Yugoslavia from fascist invaders through partisan warfare and built a healthy and stable socialist state, free of the tyranny of the Soviet Union and Stalinism.
Nelson Mandela - For ending Apartheid in South Africa, and fighting for equal rights for every man, woman and child regardless of colour.
Mikhail Gorbachev - Though viewed by many communists as a traitor, I see mr. Gorbachev as a good man, one who ended the Stalinist oppression in the Soviet Union. I believe he tried to save communism, and give it a new, better reputation. Unfortunately, however, he failed, but for trying, I believe he deserves som admiration.

Pierre Elliot Trudeau
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Elliot_Trudeau
"Just watch me."
"Trudeau led Canada through some of its most tumultuous times and was often the centre of controversy. Known for his flamboyance, he sometimes wore sandals in the House of Commons; dated celebrities; occasionally used obscenities to insult his opponents and on May 7, 1977, did a pirouette behind the back of Queen Elizabeth II."
During the 1950s, he was blacklisted by the United States and prevented from entering that country because of a visit to a conference in Moscow (where he was briefly arrested for throwing a snowball at a statue of Stalin).
