I think in the earlier seasons it suited him because his face was so...thin, but later on as he got older, his face got more chubby, so the beard suited him. I thought he looked weird in Insurrection when Deanna shaved it off because his face looked out of place without one. It definately made his character as he progressed through the series.

I like he looks better with a beard. He looks more distinguished that way. And sexy, :p. However, when the show first started and he was clean-shaved, that didn't look bad either. He was still pretty good-looking but I like the beard better.
