But it's not, first and foremost.
And if it is, then it's not intelligent, because it's only as intelligent as we make it. Doesn't make it true intelligence.

lol, I can't believe we're actually debating whether or not the Internet is a life form.

Good point, we learn by our pass generations passing on their knowledge and gaining new knowledge by learning it. Ameoba for example do not learn, they are born with all the knowledge they will ever have. So the net learns by us adding to it. Do you see where i am going with this?

Take an Internet virus, for instance. Does the Internet learn itself? No. We program it to defend against a virus.
Humans may be taught things in order to act and stuff, but we developed it ourselves over time. Aliens in outer space didn't come and tell us how to cure a certain disease. We developed it ourselves.
The Internet can't do that.

I have to agree with RM. I can't believe some people are actually believing the internet is a lifeform.

but couldent it be programed to be inteligent?

Yes, but then it would be Artificial. Hence the name A.I.

Wrong, we are able to solve puzzles without programming.

Yes, we learned in school that 2+2= 4. But because we learned that we are able too figure out that 2+3=5 and 5+20=25 without osmeone telling.

i doubt anybody ever asked you the solution too 56784302947563294786 X 4750385873258525=

But becasue you are intelligent you will be able to figure it out on your own, with help of pen and paper of course. A calculator can give the correct answer too of course, but its programmed in it to show the correct answer, but it doen't know its the correct answer.

The internet can't either, everything that is in the internet is programmed.

^Exactly. This isn't Star Trek. Machines and technology can't be programmed to solve problems, etc--to have really intelligence.
I'm sorry, but the Internet's far from Data

Another angle:

The net is a connection of Several machines, just like the cells in your brain. When you learn or get a new experince your brain cells makes a connection to the others, The net are computers that connect to each other to share info in the form of Webpages. The net experinces things threw our webpages we give it.

^Wait that might not have sounded the way i wanted it to:

A infant is born with a few billion neurons, each neuron makes a conncection to another neuron and passes along what the infant learned threw a new experince.

The internet is a group of millions of computers and host computer witch connects to another computer and passes things on. So is it not possible that the net is alive on an infant like level?

Taking your analogy to task, consider the Internet. If we stop telling it things or adding pages to it, it can't evolve. However, when someone gets out of college, and let's say, for our purposes, isn't taught anything more afterwards, he still learns and operates and evolves. The Internet cannot do thsi.

I'm too stupid to get into the scientific debate here. I don't know much about science at all, although I can understand some of what you are all saying.

So, how about the philosophical angle? Will the internet ever get to the stage where it wishes to know more about it's creator(s)? Will it ever desire to know about it's true origins? Will it ever have any philosophical thoughts of any kind? Will it desire to advance to a different plane of existence?

This topic is very good, but there'll be more questions than there are answers, and a lot of what is being said here, whilst very good, is incapable of being proved as fact.

True, but i am not talking about it being on a human level, you are comparing it with a sentient lifeform. But on a much much smaller level of life.

Interesting, True that most of these ? can't be explain or proven yet. But the debate is a valid one.

We know for a fact that humans of all cultures, at some point in their life, start asking the deep questions. Why are we here? Where are we going? How did we get here? We've all asked such questions.

What we don't know is whether other lifeforms ask the same. I know we can't compare human intelligence to animal intelligence, but do animals have such questions? Do they ever think about purpose (obviously, they'd think about it in a different way to us, if they did have such thoughts)? Do they wish to know their creator?

With that in mind, one has to wonder whether the internet will ever have any such desires to know the answer to deep and meaningful questions.

Okay i was only using that to show an example of how Neurons in any brain works, and to compare with how the net works.

Computers aren't anyway like Braincells, only that they are connected. a braincell is capable of a lotm ore then A Computer. Also, a Braincell is alive and a computer isn't.

No, they don't .They are not sentient. Sentient means being conscious, being aware. An animal might not have that, but an animal knows Suffering. The internet doesn't, it doesn't have a p consciouns so it can't.

Another reason why Internet isn't a lifeform.

If you go into SciFi, you might be able too see the A.I. computer Skynet from the Terminator movies as being a Lifeform. Skynet is Self-aware of it surroundings and felt the need too survive, its sentient.
