PostFri Jan 13, 2006 6:53 pm    Should Jean-Luc Picard accept a promotion to Rear Admiral?

The question is about that episode where Picard is offered a promotion to Rear Admiral if he teaches at Starfleet Academy.

A boring position, yes. But a boring person, I don't think so.
They should at least promote him to Fleet Captain. And yes, that's a real rank. And even if they did put him behind a desk, he could at least commandeer a shuttle and take control of any ship he wants.

Well, I think he should be a Fleet Captain at leeast............

Ermm...in the immortal words of James T. Kirk:

Don't let them promote you! Don't let them do anything that takes you off the Bridge of that ship because...while you're there, you can make a difference.

You can't go Fleet Captain because that rank doesnt exist.

He should stay as Captain. He's too good to be Admiral, he's far more effective as a Captain, out there and making a difference.

I worked somewhere once and I had a really great manager. She was very good at her job. She turned down promotion once. I'm glad, because she was so effective at her job, that her talents would have been wasted in a boring office job upstairs. Same principle with Picard.

I'd say Picard and Kirk are too good to be Admirals.

Yeah, but what would they have done with they are too old to go exploring as Captains do? They would have to do something and the most likely thing is to become and Admiral and work at Starfleet Headquarters ...

Depends how you define "old". Experience can be a good thing out there in space. Kirk and Picard's experience would be invaluable out there in space.

Experience may be a good thing, yes...but they're also taking away from those new up and coming captains. Taking away from giving them ships. Taking away from letting them gain experience. I mean, it's not like the Federation has an unlimited supply of starships that they can give to each and every captain...some have to be replaced....

And what are they going to do when his reaction time becomes too slow and he puts the ship in danger?! I mean the man is 60-something years old for crying out loud. Not that I want to see Picard out of the field, but it's time to go.

It was WAY too early for Janeway to take that position of Admiral. I mean, yes I know what I said above, and it's well and dandy that she did it, but still, it was pre-mature making her an admiral. Just my opinion...

I like Picard better as a captain. And I agree with you Voyager2004, I do think that they promoted Janeway way too early. I mean, I'm glad that she was promoted, she sure deserved it but it was kind of early. However, I don't like the fact that making her an admiral means that she would probably just have a desk job.

Ya, she doesn't seem like one willing to take a desk job so soon! I mean, like Picard, she has SO much to offer! I mean, she brought her ship home in 7 years! COME ON!!! lol...But anyway, she should do like Admiral Paris did and command a ship as an Admiral...that would be acceptable. Not some "paper pushing behind the desk" admiral! UGH! Not Janeway!

I'm kind of confused...because in Nemesis, she had Rear Admiral pips..but her file at ST.Com says she's a Vice Admiral...or summat like that...anyway, the records aren't consistent..

And I'm quite upset that she was promoted so quickly, and the circumstances surrounding her promotion are quite a mystery.....

Check this....

Kathryn Janeway

It just strikes me as strange that she would accept a promotion into the admiralty so quickly, even if Starfleet did offer it to her.......

And I agree with Voy2004 and MakeItSo on the point that if Picard is still out there, kicking major *** as a Captain..............don't you think, with her extraordinary amount of knowledge of the borg, etc........and just knowing Janeway's personality....it surprises me to see her practically retire.............IMO, she shouldn't be an Admiral. She should be a Captain.

In fact, I think that Picard should turn in his phaser for a spa-pass and be promoted to Rear Admiral. He deserves a break...I know what I said about that quote from Generations, but it just seems about time for him to let someone else step up to the plate and be the "valiant Captain saving the galaxy, one ***-kicking at a time"...know what I mean?

AND by the way, there IS such a rank as Fleet Captain, which can be equated with Commodore.

ya, I think actually, she was wearing Vice Admiral pips...one thing I alway hated about Star Trek and their admirals was that EVERY ONE of them was a Vice Admiral. There was one I think that actually had the pips of an Admiral, but only one. And Picard actually referrenced to a FLEET admiral once in TNG, but when we saw her, she had the pips of a Vice Admiral when her pips should only have one circular pip inside a square...similar to that of a "One Star" admiral in today's Navy.

So, yes Janeway should be that of a Rear Admiral-Lower Half ("One Star Admiral"), but wore the pips of a Vice Admiral...Star Trek and its admirals...ugh...

But ya, IMO, I don't think that Janeway would have settled so quickly. I think it was WAY TOO quick of Trek to THINK that she would do that. I mean, they spent seven years with her on Voyager, watching Mulgrew develop her character and writing for her character, you can't tell me that they HONESTLY think that the great Kathryn Janeway would settle so early...Ugh...whatever...lol...

Fleet Captain

Yeah, I remember that quote from Generations when Kirk was talking to Picard about staying a captain, and he's a very good captain, but sometimes I'm like...jeez man, you're getting older and I think it's damn well time that you became an admiral and let Riker take a chance at captains seat, lol.

And yeah, I remember reading Homecoming by Christie Golden and it was cool that Janeway was promoted because I mean, she spent 7 years in the Delta Quadrant, but I'm suprised that the author and everyone else in Trek, just automatically make her an admiral. I remember Kate Mulgrew saying that it would be good that Janeway became an admiral because she deserved and I agree, but I don't think Janeway would have just accepted it that easily. I mean, a desk jo and teaching at the academy with Tuvok ? (from Homecoming) I was like...okay...and then later in the Spirit Walk books, Chakotay is the captain of Voyager...I was so pissed off...I don't know, I like Chakotay and everything but I just don't think Janeway would have wanted to be an admiral so quickly. She was very close to her crew and she just seems to be very natural taking command of a starship. I mean, if you make her an admiral, let her be in command of a ship with another captain. That or have a book or movie come out where she decides to go back to being captain somehow, that would be awesome!

Weird about the Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral ranks though...probably just errors and inconsistancy with books and Star Trek movies...

Oh ya, I meant to address this in my last post...

I meant to put this earlier, BEFORE Cathexis made her post above...But I would guess that "Fleet Captain" would be the same as Commodore...

It's kind of moot of me to say it now that she already put it, but I came to that conclusion before and...anyway...Sorry...I'm just a Navy/Trek Nerd...haha
