Texas lawyer 'alert and doing fine' in Corpus Christi hospital

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Sounds like the guy stepped right into Cheney's line of fire as he turned to shoot. In bird hunting, you really shouldn't change your distance between someone.

Are you accusing the Vice-President of the United States of attempted murder?

I'm sure it was merely a joke.

Anyway, this is pretty stupid, don't see why it should make the front page of CNN.

I'm sure if he was planning something sinister, he would have planned it better. It was an accident. An unfortunate one, but an accident all the same. I'm glad Mr. Whittington is recovering.

Cheney Apparently Breaks Key Hunting Rule
AP - 18 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney apparently broke the No. 1 rule of hunting: Be sure of what you're shooting at. He also violated Texas game law by failing to buy a hunting stamp. Cheney wounded fellow hunter Harry Whittington in the face, neck and chest Saturday, apparently because he didn't see Whittington approaching as he fired on a covey of quail in Texas. Hunting safety experts interviewed Monday agreed it would have been a good idea for Whittington to announce himself -- something he apparently didn't do, according to a witness. But they stressed that the shooter is responsible for avoiding other people.

Sounds to me like both were at fault.

Well, if we want to assign blame, Cheney shouldn't have been there at all.

The problem? The problem is that you implied it. I don't care if you think he did it, but say it. Not mutter it and be like "What are you talking about?"

Then don't post,

Seems like it was an accident to me. Hunting accidents happen all the time. Though, I would expect rule of law to kick in and Cheney should get a fine for hunting without a license. He shouldn't get off the hook just because he's the Vice President. Laws are laws no matter who you are.

Things happens and that is how life goes. I am sure he didn't mean to shoot his friend, but he did need to have a license as they said. Even though he is Vice-President, he needs to obey the law as the rest of us.

With any WN topic, it is always best for any user to make their point totally clear.

It's hard to determine what someone is saying when they don't use smilies. That's why I have a rule that if I am going to be humorous, I will always post smilies, so that there can be no confusion. I thought Nadia had implied it too. It's no big deal, but I had thought that.

With any WN topic, it's best to only post if you have something insightful and constructive to say. It cuts out confusion.

Lawyer Has Heart Attack
Updated: 18:49, Tuesday February 14, 2006

The man who was accidentally shot by US Vice President Dick Cheney has suffered a heart attack.

Medics said birdshot had entered Harry Whittington's heart, causing a mild cardiac arrest.

Mr Whittington, 78, has been moved into intensive care and and will have to stay in the Corpus Christi, Texas hospital where he is being treated for at least another seven days to monitor his condition, said Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital spokesman Peter Banko.

Meanwhile, Mr Cheney will receive an official warning after it emerged he broke hunting laws.

Texas authorities have said that while he did have a hunting licence, a vital gaming stamp was missing.

Mr Cheney had reportedly not seen Mr Whittington approach, as he fired at quail on a southern Texas ranch.

The millionaire attorney was hit in the chest.

Mr Cheney, an experienced hunter, has not commented publicly about the accident.

The White House reportedly heard about the shooting an hour after it occurred on Saturday, but it was not disclosed to the press until Sunday afternoon.

A spokesman denied there had been a cover-up.
