I think that if Chakotay were Captain and Janeway was...whatever she would be if he were captain, then you wouldn't have the same Janeway or Chaktotay that you fall in love with in the show. They would have led different lives than they did and they would be different people. Chakotay would probably be more commanding because of the experience he would get from going through the ranks to become Captain. Janeway wouldn't be the same woman that you like in the show because it would mean that she gave up her life and didn't finish what she started which would make her more impulsive than she normally is.

It would be an interesting twist ... but as I said before in another topic, I like the way that things turned out ...

They would have made it home, because Chakotay wouldn't sacrifice the crew in the name of saving a species they shouldn't even be interefering with in the first place. The Ocampa had to fight there way out anyways. The Caretaker's supplies were gonna run out in like three years.

But, the Caretaker was going to destroy his array anyway. But because Voyager was there with Chakotay's ship, they were partly responsible for interrupting the chain of events leading to the Caretaker's destruction. So, because it's technically hers and Chakotay's fault, they had to right the wrong. Thus, they would have been stranded in the DQ anyway.
And, if Chakotay had all those years of Starfleet experience he missed out on, who's to say Chakotay wouldn't have made the same choice? You're going on the assumption that Chakotay would be EXACTLY the same as a Starfleet Captain as he was in the Maquis. That wouldn't be the case. His different and uniquely new experiences would have drastically altered his character, as well as Janeway's.

Not really. All they had to do was deactivate the self-destruct and then use it to send them home, but before they did that, all they had to do was put back the self-destruct. If they could deactivate it, then more than likely they could reactivate it. If that didn't work, before that shockwave hit them that catapualts them through space, they simply had to fire the tricobalt device and ride the wave all the way back to the Alpha quadrant.
As for Chakotay, at this point he was no longer thinking like a Starfleet captain. It didn't matter if he had Starfleet training. He was Maquis at that point. Chakotay wouldn't have stranded his crew for Starfleet ideals. I also don't think he would leave the Ocampa to die, because he seemed pretty resonable. I think he would have tried the two ideas I offered, rather than blindly blowing up that array.

But they couldn't reactivate it because it was damaged. So it's also very likely that more than just the technology to send them home was damaged.
I have to say that if Chakotay went all those years in Janeway's place of a Starfleet career, then he probably would have made the same decision. And it's not like Voyager could do anything for the Ocampa anyway. You already accuse Janeway of violating the Prime Directive* by destroying the array, (which the Caretaker was doing anyway, and b/c of their presence altered his plans**), so how would helping the Ocampa be in any less of a violation of the Prime Directive than they are now?
*I believe you have already accused her of violating it in another topic, if I am mistaken then my apologies.
**So because of their presence screwing up the natural flow of events, I wouldn't consider them taking action to allow things to follow the original order a violation. I understand it kind of is, but I'd have to rule with it's not a violation.

Janeway is a great captain there is no doubt about that. But, I wouldn't mind seeing Chakotay as captain. I don't think Deb created this topic to decide on who is better and ethics.

I get the topic but Leo, do you mean if it were the other way around like Chakotay was captain on his maqis ship or Voyager?
Anyway it would probably be very different, things would've been in different places and times, decisions mostly importaint ones would be changed, and maybe even more people would've died. Well never know. Its a good question though, I agree with all of your expainations I just wish we didn't 'argue' over it.(Voyager2004 I've noticed alot that when your proving your point, you type alot. Thats pretty cool, not alot of people online type alot.)...
Back on topic...

OMG!!! Come on! It's not hard to understand...the topic header is "What if Chakotay were Captain INSTEAD OF Janeway?!"
Obviously meaning that if Chakotay continued with his Starfleet career instead of dropping out for the Maquis, and Janeway dropped her starfleet career to join the Maquis. Therefore, if that were the case, then Chakotay wouldn't be trying to make it a "Maquis" ship...would he?! No...

Where in all that did you get "that means Janeway would be Maquis"? It doesn't say that. I think it leaves it to the imagination of why Chakotay becomes captain. Personally, I dream the Vidiians captured her and tore her apart for her organs. Or...the Borg captured her and assimilated her. Or...a wormhole opens up in the Delta Quadrant and the Dominion pops through and then captures her. Well...we know what happens after that...

Argh...you love pushing buttons.
I didn't say that it means that, but it's the most logical meaning. Because it says "What if Chakotay were captain INSTEAD OF Janeway?"
Therefore leading me to the conclusion of "What if Chakotay never left Starfleet, and Janeway did?"
-OR-
"What if Chakotay never left Starfleet and Janeway didn't leave Starfleet and just got another command and has nothing to do with Voyager?"
If the maker of this topic meant it any other way than those two suggestions above (or ANY variation of the two suggestions above) then they need to re-title this topic and choose better words to adequately describe what they mean.

I think it would have been interesting if they had done a "Mirror Universe" episode where Chakotay was the Captain and Janeway his first Officer - would have been interesting to see how different the ship and crew were ran because of it.
