If you live in the UK, chances are you've heard of Smash Hits, a British music magazine aimed primarily at teenagers. You may have even read it. Well, the sad news is that it's ending.

The mag was launched in 1978. Some of my earliest memories are of sneaking a read of the mag. During the early-to-mid 80s, I used to buy it now and again. Those who lived during that era will tell you that you couldn't just log on to the 'net, and browse the first news site. If you wanted news, you had to bloody well hunt for it. 
I'm just shocked that the mag is ending. Like I said, some of my earliest memories are of that mag. I probably last browsed it in 1988, and haven't browsed it since. From what I understand, though, it's been popular for a very long time. I guess it just can't compete with FREE news sites which will give you all the news you need about the world of music. Has anyone here ever read it?

Don't worry a group like the Darkness is keeping the 80s alive with its glam rock.

I'm not much of a fan of modern music. A lot of what I see is manufactured pop bands, and interchangeable singers. Modern music doesn't elicit any emotion out of me.

I got to check Darkness out then.. I am going to try to look for Mr. Big cds also. Love that band.

It is a shame, but I guess it just can't compete with news sites. Personally, I prefer magazines. They scour all the news and publish it in an entertaining way, whereas anyone can set up a news site, no matter their age, experience or writing skills (or lack of).

Magazines are better for so many reasons. The people who write for them are qualified journalists, led by an experienced editor. And they have a code of ethics. ANYBODY can set up a news site, post a bunch of rumours and pass it off as news. Some news sites are good, but there are quite a few which are just rumour sites run by teenagers (a lot of wrestling sites are like this).

The only magazine that are not good are the ones run by tabloids who exploit celebrities. However most magazine are straight forward and know what they are talking about. Most magazine now a days don't get that much censorship so why they can use a topic in a way they want. Although I like magazine like Smashhits I prefer not to buy so much magazines because they clutter my room and lower spending budget.

It's all secular rap-crap.  So many of these 'musicians' are just talentless hacks who use pre-fabbed beats with pointless lyrics which are about nothing more than sex or crime. But then again, the urban youth culture soaks it all in. They're just as stupid for listening to it.
Just the other day at work, a co-worker of mine criticized my taste in music for listening to a recent rendition of Paganini's Fifth Caprice; saying "It's just a guitar, there's no beats!"... (puke)
The potential of music is so underappreciated today. I have an extraordinarily eclectic taste in music ranging from 80s hair bands like Whitesnake to Folk Singer Gordon Lightfoot to Classical Guitar Caprices like the afformentioned. But still I cannot see music in that crap.

I guess smash hits was probably great in the 80's (I was too young!), but recently it wasn't exactly the cream of the crop, and is seen as a magazine for under 13s by a lot of teenagers.
We prefer to read music magazines that focus on one section, so Kerrang! for rock or one of those rubbish magazines for anything else.
