See... IMO hunters shouldn't be allowed modern guns. It takes away all the fun. One shot, and that grizzly is history. What should happen is this:
-Hunting expedition is organised. A group of about ten people and a guide take part.
-The guide is the only one with a modern gun. This is for emergencies, like if a bear takes the group by surprise or the hunters are in any real danger.
-the group tracks the animal. When they find it, they all have to work together and kill it with spears, bow and arrows, rocks etc.
Result: One meal for ten, good teamwork skills and a whole lot of andreneline. Also, there would be less chance of the hunted animal becoming extinct, and it would be a real sport because you would get fit through playing it. So... less overweight children... because we could teach it in schools...

They've actually upped the amount of hunting licenses to be issued here because we are so overrun with deer,

And it's going to become more and more of a problem as hunters grow fewer and further between. Deer caused something like 1.7 billion (iirc) dollars worth of damage in New York state last year alone.
Hunting is a tradition that needs to be preserved; I simply love the fact that one week of the year I spend hunting, living in a tent in the chill of November. It's the only real ritual I celebrate.

We've got a meat rack on our land, complete with pulleys, and adjustable roping. all you have to do is tie the rope around either the antlers or the neck, run the rope over the pulley, connect the other end of the rope to a 4-wheeler, pull it up, and tie it off. |
If you can't process it, don't kill it. Simple math.

Yeah. But when I go to one, I don't bring anything dead with me.

It's not like any of us go out, shoot a deer, and leave it lying on the ground... We live in an area, (Gary lives next door), where you can find someone to butcher the animal for you very easily.

I keep asking my best friend Sean to go with me: duck hunting or something similar. But he won't. He's a socialist/medium-anarchist, and utterly despises high culture/middle class-dom/authority/the establishment/rightwing-ness; he's got it into his mind that hunting is somehow part of an elitist right wing culture.

I know plenty of Liberal sportsmen... a lot of Democrat Union Workers especially.
Hunting in the United States is generally a male middle-class worker's activity. The male middle class (who are in either major party) in the U.S. is about 55-45 Republican over Democrat. Pretty well split.
Really, hunting is a guy's chance to get together, get back to nature (kinda), drink beer, and get away from the wife. I would continue to hunt as long as I live, even if I never shoot another animal.

I was talking about the UK, where hunting is much more an upperclass sport.
I understand that in the USA it's different... but being at the bottom of the barrel, economically, hunting is far too expensive
