PostMon Jan 23, 2006 8:16 pm    Gay Rights Group Questions 'American Idol' Judges

Quote:
NEW YORK (Jan. 23) - Is "American Idol" homophobic? The Fox talent show elicited a response from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLADD) after judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson made what the gay rights group deemed questionable comments on last week's premiere episode.

Last week, Simon Cowell told one male singer to "wear a dress" and Randy Jackson asked another, "are you a girl?"

On Tuesday's show, seen by a Nielsen-chart topping 35.5 million viewers, Cowell told one male contestant to "wear a dress" and Jackson asked another, "are you a girl?"

"GLAAD is reaching out to the show's producers to discuss our concerns and the concerns of community members and allies who have contacted us about this matter," said Damon Romine, a spokesman for GLAAD, in a statement published on the group's Web site.

Romine was also quoted as saying, "The real offense here was in the producer's decision to add insult to injury by turning a contestant's gender expression into the butt of a joke."

A spokesman for "American Idol" said Monday that Fox had no comment.

The popular Fox show, now in its fifth season, airs Tuesdays, 8 p.m. EST.

Agreed. It's Simon! What do you expect him to do when a guy's sounding like a girl or whatever? I mean, it's ridiculous. If you don't understand the guy and the show, stay away.
I don't watch American Idol, but I've seen it before and understand Simon. He's harsh, and just because he turned down some gay people doesn't mean that he, or Randy, are anti-Gay. I mean, get real. You can't force them to admit people who can't sing, or don't sound like they're "supposed" to.
They make too many big deals out of nothing...

I don't think they're homophobic. I saw both of last week's episodes, neither of the contestants mentioned were all that great, and about the whole Randy thing... the rest of America watching was confused, as well,

Here, Simon told one of the contestants to wear a dress, and he did, and sang again. It was cool, and funny.

The judges just say what they think. Doesn't mean their homophobic.

In the Aussie Idol a transvestite got through to the finals! He didnt sound perfect or was mega talented. But he looked great as a girl, dressed really out there/sexy.Put on a great show, everyone loved him!
He got lots of gigs in gay clubs after he left the show and a record deal!
The judges are not Homophobic, just stating the obvious,no talent.
If a talented gay person did an audition, they would have put them through to the next round!Get over it people!

I think we've seen and heard enough of Simon Cowell's opinions on various auditioners for American Idol to know that just because someone is gay doesn't mean he's automatically predjudiced against them. If they can't sing, they can't sing.

I don't watch the show very often at all, but I managed a glimpse of it last night and there was this guy on, named Jamie, who was dressed like a girl.....he wore lip gloss/color and I'm pretty sure he was definitely gay from his behavior.

The judges seemed to have kept their mouths shut, and I think it was mainly because GLADD put up such a stink over that other guy they had to ask about his gender, that they didn't say anything about his appearance.

Anyway, he was terrible!!

Moral of the story is......

If you're someone who is easily offended, and you think you can sing.....chances are you won't make it on American Idol.

I mean, how many ppl have auditioned with pride, thinking they can actually sing well..........not just ppl who want the attention from the media or whatever, I mean people who truly think they're better than any and everyone else.....

Being gay isn't conclusive enough to warrant keeping someone from being the next American Idol, and I highly doubt that Simon Cowell or Paula Abdul, or Randy Jackson for that matter, really care about what the sexual preferences of that person are. Period.
