PostSun Jan 15, 2006 1:41 am    Favorite World Leader

Alright, I have a question for you guys. Who is your favorite World Leader? Now, I'm not saying the best, in your opinion, but who's your favorite? If you have more than one top favorite, list the others as well. If you would like, list your second favorite(s) too.
By World Leader, mind you, I mean President, Prime Minister, etc--whatever the title for your country's eqivalent to a president.

My personal favorite is Ronald Reagan. He had intelligence and wits and was a fantastic leader (the best), a fantastic President overall (the second best, next to Lincoln), a FANTASTIC speaker (definitely appropriately nicknamed the Great Communicator), extremely honest, and everything else you could think of and want in a leader. He is definitely, IMO, my favorite President (world leader).

My second favorite would more than likely be the current President Bush. After September 11th he really showed that he could be a great leader and did a large amount of good things for this country.

Note that my favorite Presidents are not those that I think are the best, as Reagan is, IMO, the second best and Bush is up there, but I find it premature now, after more thought, to really decide where to put him.

I really liked Reagan...I mean...he was just...all of those things you mentioned, RM, and more.....

Does my favorite have to be someone recent? Can it be someone from....like the earlier centuries??

I was thinking more of the time since the Industrial Revolution (Washington era), so if it's around that time, then yes. Otherwise, if it was ancient history, or even middle ages, then I would say no.

Pierre Elliot Trudeau was by far the greatest politician to walk this earth....

John Lennon said it best when he said " If there were more leaders like Mr. Trudeau, there would be world peace."

He brought Canada it's flag, he brought Canada its constitution from Britain, he made the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, he legalized homosexuality, he brought in official bilingualism and multiculturalism, he was very outspoken and charismatic. He wasn't really afraid to tell anybody anything.

Can't remember who said it but there is a rather grusome quote...

"In Trudeau, Canada finally has a leader worthy of assassination."

Pierre Trudeau wrote:
Canada is a country whose main exports are hockey players and cold fronts. Our main imports are baseball players and acid rain.

I bear solemn witness to the fact that NATO heads of state and of government meet only to go through the tedious motions of reading speeches, drafted by others, with the principal objective of not rocking the boat.

If I found in my own ranks that a certain number of guys wanted to cut my throat, I'd make sure that I cut their throats first.

We peer so suspiciously at each other that we cannot see that we Canadians are standing on the mountaintop of human wealth, freedom and privilege.

The die is cast in Canada: there are two ethnic and linguistic groups; each is too strong and too deeply rooted in the past, too firmly bound to a mother culture, to be able to swamp the other. But if the two will collaborate inside of a truly pluralist state, Canada could become a privileged place where the federalist form of government, which is the government of tomorrow's world, will be perfected.

I just think you Westerners should take over this country if you are so smart.

The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.

Reason over passion.

The essential ingredient of politics is timing.

Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau caused a minor scandal when opposition MPs claimed that he had mouthed the words "f*** o**" to them in the House of Commons in February 1971. Pressed by journalists, Trudeau later unconvincingly stated he may have said (or mouthed) "fuddle duddle or something like that". The phrase then took on a humorous connotation of that event for Canadians.

So yeah, Trudeau rocked. He was extremely Liberal, too .

Queen Victoria is my favourite- she did reign over the British Empire at it's largest, making her a true world leader

Since the Second World War, I'd say Clement Richard Attlee (Old Labour Prime Minister) was my favourite leader. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here. Sound strange? While he was prime minister, the National Health Service was created, something that has saved my life at least 5 times. Along with that, he helped introduce the nationalisation of heavy industry, and a National Insurance scheme (that paid for pensions, the NHS and for those who are unable to work for themselves). He was very liberal (as the Labour party till Tony Blair was) and his policies made Britain, in my opinion, one of the nicest places to live in the world if you don't have money.

Outside of Britain, Lenin was a great leader (but not Stalin), and I like the history of Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

I agree with you. Wim Kok was much better then Jan-Peter balkenbende.

But, anyway.. my fav is:

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, (born July 18, 1918), was the first democratically elected President of South Africa, having previously been a prominent anti-apartheid activist there. Initially committed to non-violence, he later became involved in the planning of underground armed resistance activities. Mandela's 27-year imprisonment, much of which he spent in a tiny prison cell on Robben Island, became one of the most widely publicized examples of apartheid's injustices. Although the apartheid regime and nations sympathetic to it considered him and the ANC to be terrorist, Mandela's support of the armed struggle against apartheid is now widely believed to have been justified. Moreover, the policy of reconciliation Mandela pursued upon his release in 1990 enabled a peaceful transition to a new, democratic South Africa an achievement which many South Africans believe would have been impossible without his influence.

Having received over a hundred awards over four decades, Mandela is one of the most celebrated and respected people of modern times. He is in his 80s, yet he still continues to voice his opinion on topical issues, while enjoying the prestige accorded to him as an elder statesman.

^I just loooooooove that man..! He is just like Mohandas Gandhi, who i also loooooooove.

He co-founded Solidarity (Solidarność), the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995 (succeeded by Aleksander Kwaśniewski).

Although i said Wim Kok is better then JP balkenende, our best Prime Minister ever was Willem Drees of course. "Vadertje drees" Decolonized Indonesia and formed the "welfare state" in Holland.

World leaders...Mandela certainly. He has done some amazing work. Also, there are a few I'd put on my list, not because they were great or even good world leaders, but because they were facinating and they had such an impact. Stalin is among those. Again, just becuase their facinating.

As for world leaders coming from my country (America ) I gennerally agree with Schlesinger. He (currently) puts Clinton, Regan, and Bush sr as 'average' presidents. And his 'Great' presidents are (surprise) Lincoln, Washington, and FDR. (note, the list I was looking at was from 1996, it's shifting. I think Regan is going down in rating...)

Here's a page with a list of his stuff and an explination as to how he ranks.

Hmm, quite interesting!

I'd say...here's my Top 10! (Note: They aren't necessarily the nicest, most humane people...but they certainly made an impact!!)

1.) Trudeau
2.) FDR
3.) Hitler
4.) MLK
5.) Lincoln
6.) Reagan
7.) Queen Victoria
8.) Tony Blair
9.) Mandela
10.) Stalin

I'm not sure about Reagan. I think he's a bit overglorified. But other than that I agree with you. They are all facinating people who've had a huge impact on the world. Perhaps I'd replace Regan with Pope John Paul II.

Nice. You forgot the Pope.

But yeah, I think that he's had much more impact on the world in this century than Regan. Plus he's much more interesting. To me at least.
