Pregnant Woman Shot To Death While Calling 911
Husband Charged With Murder In Wife's Death

POSTED: 8:53 am CST December 28, 2005
UPDATED: 4:20 pm CST December 28, 2005

HOUSTON -- A pregnant woman was shot and killed while calling 911 in her southeast Harris County home Wednesday, officials told KPRC Local 2.

Police said Sherry Arnold was in the house in the 9900 block of Sageroyal at Blackhawk Boulevard when she apparently called 911 shortly after 1 a.m. Dispatchers heard a gunshot on the call before the line went dead and sent deputies.

"There was a disturbance and you could hear a gunshot that had gone off," said Sgt. James Parker of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

When officers arrived, they found Arnold shot in the head. She died a short time later.

Arnold was three months pregnant.

Neighbors said they saw Arnold arguing with her husband, 46-year-old Howard Holmes, outside their home Tuesday.

"I think he would drink and he would get drunk and they would just argue about different things," neighbor Arlene Rittmel said.

"The next-door neighbors have said that they argued a little bit -- that they could hear them arguing through the house," neighbor Thomas Sweeney said.

Holmes was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder. Deputies said he would not be charged in the death of the unborn child due to the pregnancy being in its early stages.

Holmes does not have any record of violence, officials said.

Two rifles were found inside the home and taken as evidence, officials said.

The couple was married two months ago.

"She was very nurturing. She had a lot of pets, so she was always real loving. So I think she was real excited to have a baby," neighbor Shirley Trovence said.

Both were medics in the Army reserves.

Arnold was expected to report to Iraq in early 2006.

OMG! This is terrible to kill a pregnant woman. This world is getting worst by the minute each day. This saddens me deeply.

Yeah, it's unbelievable. The man clearly has a disorder of some kind, a normal person wouldn't dare doing this.

Thats deplorable. To kill someone is bad enough in and of itself, but to kill a pregnant woman... thats taking two lives and I don't care what those "officals" say. Its bad enough that it was her husband, and even worse that he isn't being charged with two counts of murder.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Starbuck, but does that now mean that you agree with me on abortion--that it's taking a life? Seems so.
Not that I want to bring this into an abortion debate--and not that it should--but I'm just curious.

That is so stupid! Early stages or not, he still took away that little babys life!

I agree Nadia. People just don't value life these days rather it would be a baby or anyone else's. Wait let me rephrase that. No one values a life of a baby these days... That sounds right. I am not putting words in mouths just speaking the truth.

Sounds a bit like the Scott Peterson case to me...
And yeah, bull crap it was too young. It's a LIFE. Whether it's a case like this or abortion, it includes the MURDER of the unborn CHILD.

Perhaps it would help if we kept in mind that WN is designed for debate... The point is not to go off topic.
