Nah I think it'd be possible if the world wasn't divided in countries and the governments would put all their warfare budgets into research. But humans are just far too dump and greedy to do such a thing. If the world leaders would've done this 200 years ago, we would've colonized the Alpha/Proxima Centauri system by now... As far as that's possible of course

...

I think I'm going to cry about this. Seriously.

Lol, I think Five - Seven is perfectly correct. We would have been absurdly advance by now! Damn the governments . And yes, ST universe had a nuke war.

Awww I'll cry with you.

But, you know, when I work at NASA, I'll make sure we get Warp drive by 2063

A couple of points:

Most of "our" technological advancements ultimately stem from military development. The rest stem from from greed alone.

Once they squeeze this planet dry, they'll have to go into space, and they'll have to take us with them.

WW3? Where Nuclear weapons accounted for over 300 million casualties...

So what do we think? 2063, Data refered to it being approx 9? years after WW3.

Humans fighting over the last remaining supplies of fossil fuels perhaps?

Being a Trekker I would love to beleave that mankind will succeed in creating faster than light propulsion within the next 50 years, indeed perhaps humans maywell have the ability by then but compaired to the cost of today space missions I beleave we could never afford the to do it.

I doubt it, we have to solve our own problems before we take it beyond the stars, and with the problems in the middle east etc, I seriously doubt it. So I don't think it has much to do with technology, it has to do with how we treat eachother first, as if we can't respect other cultures on our own world, how can we even do that with alien species???

On technology base, i don't think the Iraqi war is going to slow anything down.

Remember: In star trek Warp drive was invented after World war III, withm ost goverenments unstable and most mayor cities destroyed.

Probably without the war Warp drive would have never been invented, and no way would we have gotten in contact with the Vulcans.

war is neccessary and no war is going to slow us down.

We are like cochroaches, you can't exterminate us.

Earth is a capitalist society, at best; it favours accumulating wealth, not knowledge; our scientific projects are well underfunded, even today. The projects that DO get major funding tend to be in bed with "Evangelical Theory"*. For example, there is a major "research" project into human spiritual auras, in the united states. They use a measuring device, into which one inserts one's finger; it attempts to measure electrostatic activity across a piece of er...glass I think.

While we are ruled by avaricious men who can be summed up with the following three characteristics, we shall not be progressing any time soon. "Trust me, Data"

The characteristics are: greed, power-grabbing-complex(*2), and hate.

* A touch of light humour; don't take it personally.

(*2) It is commonly accepeted that all humans attempt to gain power at some level or in some respect.

But, as you must recall...Zefram Cochrane was the ONE man who invented the Warp Drive. Not a team of scientists. Now, obviously, he had to have help and stuff, but it's not like it was a government project that created the drive.
