Yes, yes, I know, there is already a song lyrics thread. This one is different though, in that you're gonna explain why these lyrics moved you, and which bits stand out the most.
One of my favourite songs of the moment (of all time really) is Elvis Costello's Oliver's Army. It has a catchy tune, and speaks a lot of truths to me, even though it's quite old now (1979 anybody?).

Friendly fire unfortunately plays far too big a part in today's wars. On the spur of the moment, you can shoot at the wrong person. Apart from everyone wearing huge signs with their country written on it in many languages (not practical, but its a funny image) I can't think of any solution, though I do wonder why it occurs more often now than it did in wars gone by.

Since this song was written, China have taken Hong Kong back from the British (who had it on loan for 99 years... strange land deals  ) though it must be said since they still drive on the left, and have thier own currency and stuff they're very unlike China itself. London is full of Arabs, as the song says, in that there are a lot more Arabs there than there used to be. This isn't a bad thing though... multiculturism is a very good thing. The next line refers to the continuing struggles in Palestine, but somehow I can't see it being "Overrun by a Chinese line"... it's too far. The next line, along with the reoccuring theme of the song gets me the most. The majority of those in the armed forces in Britain are from the poorer parts of the large cities, including Liverpool (on the Mersey), Newcastle-upon-Tyne (in fact, more people from the North East sign up than anywhere else in England) and London (the Thames runs through it).

Yup, recruitment agencies don't tell those joining up that if they're called up they're gonna be fighting, and if they're not killed their friends will be. Most of those who join up now do so as they have no other option, apart from crime or the dole. There is a lack of jobs for unskilled workers now in this country, and the jobs their fathers did don't exist anymore. The chance to see the world also encourages people to sign up. They never talk of the bad stuff until you've commited yourself to your 4 years.

I looooove this song for two reasons. Firstly, it makes me think of Kate whenever I hear it, and the song just seems to fit her so well. Secondly, I love the lyrics to this song, so that, combined with the music, especially the piano in it makes it such a beautiful song. Is my new favourite for sure.
