Sun Dec 11, 2005 6:56 am Internet Fandom Questionnaire - For University Dissertation |
|
This questionnaire is for my University dissertation project about internet fandoms and fan culture. I would appreciate it if you could spend a couple of minutes filling it out. Please, tell any online friends in this fandom or other fandoms. I am trying to get a large sample.
PS. If you are involved in another fandom (Buffyverse, Alias, Firefly, BSG, Farscape, The OC, Lost etc) please could you take this survey twice I would like to see if there are any differences between fandoms. Just mark the top of the quesionnaire with the name of the fandom. Thanks.
If you have any problems please PM me or leave a reply here.

6) In the both online (when outside of the fandom) and offline worlds to you regularly identity yourself as a fan of the show? If so, how?
Definitely. So says the Klingon patches on my jacket and backpack. And usually people will hear me speak of Star Trek in reference to situations or some such. I'm happy to be a Trekkie.
7) Do you feel that your fandom has given you a voice? Either through show campaigns/conventions/storyline changed as it was not popular with fans? (Please describe your reasons)
No, I don't really think so...I seriously doubt paramount cares too much, or the last series would've reflected their respect for true fans.
8 ) What is or has been your level of involvement within the fandom? Eg. Fan-Fiction (reading and writing), buying merchandise, letter writing, fan art or regular discussions.
I roleplay (usually as a starfleet doctor) online. I don't usually get into discussions on the forums as much as casually with my friends.

6) In the both online (when outside of the fandom) and offline worlds to you regularly identity yourself as a fan of the show? If so, how?
Yes. I have discussions about startrek in college classes. It's fun, and it passes the time, and normally ends up in a huge debate of which woman looks best (I suppose that's what you get when you're in a class full of lads )
7) Do you feel that your fandom has given you a voice? Either through show campaigns/conventions/storyline changed as it was not popular with fans? (Please describe your reasons)
Nope, but that wasn't my aim.
8 ) What is or has been your level of involvement within the fandom? Eg. Fan-Fiction (reading and writing), buying merchandise, letter writing, fan art or regular discussions.
Used to discuss and write fan fiction (mostly awful), now read fan fiction, and watch the episodes.

I already filled out one for Star Trek from one of the Yahoo groups, but I never got around to filling out a second one, so this one is for Firefly

Again, not really. I wasn't a fan when they were trying to get Serenity in a movie, so I missed that part of the fandom
8 ) What is or has been your level of involvement within the fandom? Eg. Fan-Fiction (reading and writing), buying merchandise, letter writing, fan art or regular discussions.
Mostly discussion and looking at fansites.

Very different personalities. Trek is a much bigger fandom, but Firefly fans tend to be a bit more...diehard. I'm not sure that's the best word to describe it. But they are much more detail oriented.

I believe in the vision behind Star Trek, and I feel that in order to fully express it, that fans should unite and set an example for others as a peaceful community of people with a common interest.

6) In the both online (when outside of the fandom) and offline worlds to you regularly identity yourself as a fan of the show? If so, how?
Yes, I regularly identify myself as a fan of the show by talking to my friends about it. Also, when I meet new people, I make it a point to explain that I am a fan of Star Trek. There are other times when I wear meh handy-dandy Star Trek: Voyager shirt. And, when inviting people into my home, I warn them that they will be shocked to see the extraordinary collection of Star Trek and other Sci-Fi DVD sets, but mainly Trek.
7) Do you feel that your fandom has given you a voice? Either through show campaigns/conventions/storyline changed as it was not popular with fans? (Please describe your reasons)
I surely do feel that my fandom has given me a voice. Conventions, especially have helped to get our opinions as fans of Star Trek (and other shows) out there to the writers, directors, producers, etc of the actual show, as well as the CEOs of the franchise. The people's opinion matters and is the underlying factor in the success of a franchise.
8 ) What is or has been your level of involvement within the fandom? Eg. Fan-Fiction (reading and writing), buying merchandise, letter writing, fan art or regular discussions.
All of the above, except for letter writing. I prefer to meet the actors/actresses in person and get a real response.

I guess something like that, though I've never kept a record.

No. I don't have a star-trek uniform or something. I just have DVD's I watch, that's it. I don't go to conventions cuz they're usually in the US, and I live in the Netherlands. I guess there are conventions here, too, but I don't feel the urge to go there
