Fri Dec 02, 2005 2:20 am The TRUTH about Mr. Rogers |
|
My dad told me earlier today that the infamous late Mr. Rogers of the kids show "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" was, in fact, a soldier in Vietnam, and the reason he always wore a sweater was to cover up all the tatoos on his arms that he had from his war days.
Did you know about this? Could you imagine such a man fighting in a war--and a war as big as Vietnam? Could you imagine Mr. Rogers killing people? It's quite hard for me to imagine any of this, but it's fact, and it's quite interesting.
"It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood..."

Charlie told me that he read in the news some where that it was a rumor due to Mr. Rodgers denied it. And it was a rumor about John Denver too about being a sniper in Vietnam. This happened after Mr. Rogers had died. But, news could be wrong like they always are... Or Charlie misunderstood but most likely he didn't. Cause I am the one that misunderstands all the time. Charlie is smarter and intelligent than me.
But, maybe someone else knows on here what happened. We could get their take on it. I heard that Mr. Rodgers was a sniper in Vietnam also. But, I think it is just a rumor.

Not all soldiers fight. And not all soldiers that fight kill people.

I just asked my dad for the source. It's not just a rumor--it's true, and he's sure of it. It was in a prominent news paper or news magazine (he can't remember exactly), but he read the article. So, there you have it. It's not simply a rumor, but the truth. If I can dig up the article I will.

What would you expect?
Almost everyone who were available to fight in the Vietnam war were called in by the draft to fight the war. It's one of those "You have no choice but to join or face jail time."
So what if he did fight the vietnam war. Mr. Rogers was a good kind hearted man who cared for children. Gave back more to a community than anyone I may add.
Leave him alone please.

Heres what Wiki had to say about it:
Quote: | Sniper rumors
A rumor (turned urban legend) developed that Rogers was, at some point in his life, a sniper for the United States army in Vietnam (or elsewhere), and that he wore his trademark long-sleeved cardigan sweater to cover the tattoos of his army days. Though this rumor has been thoroughly debunked, it continues to have some circulation. Its persistence represents a typical subculture-style distortion: a popular, well-loved icon is asserted to be a killer or another unsavory figure, when most credible accounts prove such assertions wrong.
At least one episode proved the "tattoo" portion wrongin one episode, Rogers described his daily exercises over a montage of clips. Several shots are shown of Rogers swimming, and no tattoos are visible. |

Just cause the media says it doesn't make it the "Gospel" truth. I thought you of all people would realize that.

Yea i wouldn't doubt that he was in it -- especially with the draft and all. I took a Vietam War History class last semester and learned allllll about it! My dad was in it but he didn't fight. He was stationed in Okinawa in the air force. i actually did an interview with him on it for the Veterans History Project. We recorded it and all, and now it is in the National Library of Congress for the rest of time!
Deb, if you're interested, i think it's something that you should look into for Charlie -- it'd be kinda cool! Do a search for "Veterans History Project". Anyway, he'd be able to talk about his experiences in the military and such and it would go down in history!

I know, but do I believe such a paper would lie? Only in the editorial columns. Well, if it is false, then the outlet should state it as such. And it deals not with politics or a key issue of the day. Therefore, I am inclined to trust it more than not.
And borgslayer, I wasn't attacking the man or anything. I was just starting a topic based on an intriguing thing I had been told. I know he was a good, kind-hearted man. I never disputed that. Heck, I remember watching some of his shows as a little kid.

Yeah, if you google it, all that comes up are a bunch of urban legend sites. I doubt that he was involved, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was, either.

Being in Vietnam, or even killing people in Vietnam does not take anything away from him. It was what every soldier had to do to protect their country. It was either kill or be killed.
