Wed Nov 23, 2005 12:05 pm Ohio's Schmidt Sorry for 'Coward' Comment |
|
Quote: | CINCINNATI (Nov. 23) - Ohio Republican Jean Schmidt said Tuesday she should have rephrased her sharp critique of a fellow congressman's call to immediately pull troops from Iraq.
Schmidt was booed off the floor of the U.S. House on Friday after she criticized Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., saying that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
When Schmidt made the comment, Democrats rose in protest at the suggestion that Murtha, a decorated Vietnam veteran and the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, was a coward.
Schmidt said the comment was prompted by a conversation she had with state Rep. Danny Bubp, though he denies discussing Murtha with Schmidt.
Schmidt, who sent Murtha a note of apology on Friday moments after her speech, said in a statement Tuesday that she never intended to attack Murtha personally.
"While I strongly disagree with his policy, neither Representative Bubp nor I ever wished to attack Congressman Murtha," she said. "I only take exception to his policy position."
Bubp said in a statement of his own Tuesday that his conversation with Schmidt "was based strictly on the proposal to immediately withdraw our troops from Iraq and the consequences of such a proposal."
Schmidt declined during an interview on Cincinnati radio station WLW to discuss her fellow Republican's denial: "I was repeating words. I am not going to get into that debate."
Neither Schmidt nor Bubp returned calls left at their offices Tuesday.
Murtha has called Schmidt's comment ridiculous.
"You can't spin this. You've got to have a real solution," Murtha said Monday when asked about her remarks at a news conference in Pennsylvania. "This is not a war of words, this is a war."
Other Republicans also criticized Murtha for calling for the withdrawal of troops. President Bush and other administration officials have since said that while they don't agree with Murtha, they do not question his patriotism. |

The Republican party is just bursting with scandalous cover stories these days. It's nice that she apologized.. but still. How can you openly insult someone like that? Especially when you're the most junior member of congress. Some party's colors are showing.
Applied quotes, please read the World News rules, thank you. - IIM

She broke her promise when she was elected:
Quote: | I pledge to walk in the shoes of my colleagues and refrain from name-calling or the questioning of character," Schmidt said then. "It is easy to quickly sink to the lowest form of political debate. Harsh words often lead to headlines, but walking this path is not a victimless crime. This great House pays the price." |
She is a dreadful awful woman. How she got elected I'll never know

She is NOT. First of all, she apologized for it. Second of all, she was reading a flipping letter of a gosh-darn troop in Iraq! That article proves that the AP is another biased outlet because it left out the key thing: it was a letter from a troop, something that again proves the anti-Bush bias in the media.
Regardless, you can't call someone who disagrees with you an awful person off the bat for reading a Marine's quote.
And oberon, how DARE you say that the Republican party agrees with that or that it shows their "true colors?" How DARE you? That is insulting, ridiculous, and out-right wrong. Forgive me for this, but you are why the left annoys me so much, and are a key example of one deeply drinking the left-wing kool aide. How is it?
Yeah, om, I'm a conservative republican and I disagree with that Marine's statement. I disagree with Murtha but won't say mean things about him at all. Oh, yeah, I fit right into there. Showing my true colors, is she? Something I didn't know about. Hmmm...
A friendly word to the wise, though: Don't subject yourself to such things like this that the left is putting out to you. Have a more fair perspective on things. It sometimes may not look like it, but in the last year I have changed a lot. I have been more fair and more accepting of other viewpoints, and have formed my own opinions, taking multiple ideas and facts into account. I suggest you do the same, so that you can be a truly effective debater and thinker.
And finally, I point you to this part of the article that you seem to have skipped:

Jeez. Hasn't anyone ever heard "Don't kill the messenger"? We all know (or should know) that she was reading a letter from a troop in Iraq, and it seems to be a bigger deal than the whole X on Cheney's face thing, on which we only have CNN's word that it was a "technical malfunction". I personally don't think she even needs to apologize.

Quote: | Three days after Rep. Jean Schmidt was booed off the House floor for saying that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do," the Ohioan she quoted disputed the comments.
Danny Bubp, a freshman state representative who is a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, told The Enquirer that he never mentioned Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., by name when talking with Schmidt, and he would never call a fellow Marine a coward.
"The unfortunate thing about all of that is that her choice of words on the floor of the House - I don't know, she's a freshman, she had one minute.
"Unfortunately, they came out wrong," said Bubp, R-West Union. |
As for your attack on oberon "you are why the left annoys me so much". You ain't exactly a great spokesperson for conservatism either.

Yes well I paid credit to her apology. And I certainly had no intention of so deeply offending you. I was merely making light of a current trend. And I would appreciate it if you wouldn't personally attack me.

I don't think he was peronally attacking you. He was just explaining things. Yes, we all get offended time or another. That is just part of life.

I read the article, and I believe that what she said was a troop from Iraq, not Bubp. But the point was that oberon and you seemed to be simply skipping that fact. And regardless, this just shows that you two's attack on her was unwarrented and wrong in itself. She was just relaying a message from a Marine in Iraq, and yet you have the audacity to call her an "awful" person and oberon to say that it shows the "true colors" of the Republican party and all that? No. No way, no how. And it was unwarrented. And it's not like she does this continually, like some of the Democrats have done.
And it's true that this is why the left annoys me, although I should have worded it "often annoys me." Apologies for the wrong word choice. It's people that say certain things like him that have kept me turned off the left side of the aisle--which I could be more leaning to, but instead it just annoys me so much that I couldn't imagine being close to there. But perhaps it wasn't the nicest--or the correct--choice of words, and for that I am sorry. (Btw, that was me--I wasn't speaking for other conservatives )

A trend that is non-existent and irrelivant. But please read my above apology.

Your wrong again, I quote
Quote: | esterday I stood at Arlington National Cemetery attending the funeral of a young marine in my district. He believed in what we were doing is the right thing and had the courage to lay his life on the line to do it. A few minutes ago I received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp, Ohio Representative from the 88th district in the House of Representatives. He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do.. |

Okaaaay, don't need to be so mean about it. I admit my mistake. My apologies. I must have misinterpreted what I heard. Thanks for that clarification.

Why no hub-bub about Charlie Rengle claiming Dick Cheney is senile?
Why no hub-bub about the countless Liberals accusing the President of lying (That's a VERY STRONG accusation, considering they have no proof.)
I have no problem with Congressman Schmidt's comment, and I wish she hadn't retracted it. It was a good statement.

I don't think that it was good for her to do that, she was relaying a message for a former Marine--a message taken out of context. Where's the liberal outrage about those two things you listed? And what about Dennis Kucinich accusing the President of targeting civilians for assassination? Al Gore for saying that Bush "betrayed this country" and "played on our fears!"
Why the double standard?
