PostMon Oct 31, 2005 11:38 am    Female characters

Don't know if this has been discussed before, I couldn't find it anyways.... but who do you think is the best female character, not necessarily the best looking.

I liked Janeway but found her too soft sometimes to be a captain in a class with Picard say. My vote would go to B'Elanna. I liked the way they portrayed her and the conflicts in character between her Human and her Klingon sides.

What do others think?

If it's only on Voyager, I'd have to say Janeway as well. Janway's character had a very hard time to bring her crew home. It felt like she was alone is trying to get them home and it requies a strong mind.

The most female characters are in order of:

Janeway
B'Elanna
Kes
Seven of nine as last

I'd say:

B'Elanna
Janeway
Kes / 7 of 9

Seven.

For the first time the Trek "alien other" character was a woman. And this alien other was a refugee from one of the most repressive regimes we've ever seen in sci fi.

Like children in war zones today, Seven was forced to do horrible things against her will. She was mutilated and abused. After she was severed from the Collective, she faced prejudice, disdain, hatred, and derision. She was alone, clueless as to how to function in human society, yet she kept going, kept trying.

She was smart, gutsy, determined, loyal, and honest.

And she is my favorite character in all of Trek, not just on Voyager.

The "alien other" characters--the Trek standards that comment on humanity. E.g. Spock, Data, Worf, Odo, Seven, the Doctor...

Seven was the first that was a female--and the first that was a refugee from a repressive regime.

Seven was a great character as well and I really liked how they portrayed her. I think Jeri Ryan did a good job there and the episode where the Doctor resided in her I think she acted marvelously. Kes's character I never liked all that much partly because of the actress. They could've done more with her.

Janeway
B'elanna Torres
Seven of Nine
Kes

I think Janeway was definitely the best character, but that's my opinion. I think that she was quite strong and that, had B'elanna been Captain of Voyager, a lot of people would've ended up dead...she's just a little TOO headstrong. Janeway was the most balanced and sound-minded, even though it seemed like maybe sometimes she went overboard or was stubborn. Kes was underdeveloped...and Seven of Nine was too wrapped up in her rediscovering her own individuality, etc. She was still recovering and trying to process everything Borg style....

Mine would have to be:
Janeway,
Kes,
Seven of Nine/ B'elanna.

I think Janeway had a huge task to keep her promise to the crew. She also adds humour to voyager sometimes especially with the coffee and she's just such a AWSOME charater. Also a great actress plays her.

Are we going by acting or character?

For acting I would go with:
Janeway
7 of 9
B'ellana
Naomi Wildman and every other woman on the show
and last: Kes, she seemed so fake

1. Janeway/Seven (they both acted spectacularly, I think Teya summerized why I like Seven very nicely )
2. B'Elanna (Loved her, but she started to loose her edge a bit torwards the end. I think a lot of them did, probably the writers doing)
3. Kes (Mary Sue - need I say more?)

And I like Niomi Wildman, but she was technically a girl, not a woman

I totally agree about the coffee thing...none of the female characters had that little characteristic quirk about them, ya know? All we ever heard about B'elanna is in "Extreme Risk", she liked banana pancakes...but nothing perpetual like we saw with Janeway.

And TrekkieMage, I agree about the actresses behind Janeway and Seven, both performed with amazing believability and skill. Jennifer Lien, however....I just don't think she was convincing...she did seem fake and unrealistic, and I never could get over the fact that she reminded me of an elf mixed with Peter Pan.....plus, whenever Kes had a telepathic experience, her freak-out panic attacks weren't very believable, at all. For example, in "Time and Again", when she has that one vision about the explosion, etc...just....no.

Naomi was always cute and I think Scarlett Pomers did an awesome job developing the character. I have to add her onto the list below Seven of Nine and above Kes.

I liked B'elana a lot. I think I would be friends with her if I was on Voyager.

At first when Naomi was introduced I wasn't sure about what they'd do with her. It turned out well though and I liked her interactions with Seven.

At least she didn't grow up fast enough to become a Wesley Crusher...

LOL you messed up with your quote there..but it's okay...lol just know that I was the one who said that, no Skelly.

Yeah I did wonder about Naomi when they first introduced her, but it turned out pretty well in the end.

I dont mean to be the party pooper but this post is ridiculous because we all know that Kathryn janeways the best and that this same post has been posted in so many different ways that its starting to confuse me...not in a bad way.

I had no problem with B'Elanna "losing her edge". Frankly, I saw it as a sign of maturity for her character. I would have hated it if she had remained as she was during the show's early seasons.

I think I would put Janeway first... Then B'Elanna, then Seven and then Kes...

Kes is last because I'm not as familiar with her character as I am with the others, and they're all pretty close anyway...

Janeway all the way! She wins for brains, beauty and character! I'm going to surprise myself but putting Seven second... I've come to respect the character and I'm trying to ignore what the writers do to her later... then theres B'Elanna....

True. However, I think she also lost a bit of spark. But I also haven't actually seen many of the later episodes recently, so I guess I can't be a great judge of that...
