Bill Gates is 50 today.
I have respect for Bill Gates, a philanthropist. I truly believe the world needs more people like him, out there creating wealth and contributing to society. I do not agree with everything that he and Microsoft do, but I respect his accomplishments. I wish we had more people like him, and less people like the bureacrats and politicians of this world.
Happy 50th, Bill.

I find it amazing that he is both one of the most idolized and most dispised geeks of all time. Loved because of his marketing ability, hated because his OS is a piece of junk

Aside from the attrocious Windows ME, Microsoft has dominated in the area of OS quality.

It's not an aweful OS (if it were really that bad, people wouldn't use it).
But compared to Linux and the MacOS, Windows leaves a lot to be desired.

Windows XP is the ultimate OS. Lately Mac and Linux have lost their flare.

Regardless of the quality of Microsoft's products, it is simply not possible to catalogue the development of the computing industry without mentioning Microsoft. Microsoft, and in particular, Bill Gates, has been a large driving force in the development of computers for decades now, and probably will be for decades to come.
I'm not a lover of Windows (Ubuntu now has my heart) and I'm aware of its flaws. >_< But the fact is that it works and that Bill Gates has accomplished a revolutionary thing, which I think is rather cool. It reminds me of those Bell satellite TV commercials that were running during Christmas with the "we are all connected" slogan. We are all connected, and anyone who can help us become more connected (eg; through the Internet and use of computers) has done a great thing.

He is a marketing genious, and he brought computers to the average person and made them commonplace. And Hitchhiker, Ubuntu is what we're using in CS right now
