Maybe it's you who just doesn't know Trek.
Yes, I agree depends on the timeline. But we're obviously talking about the current timeline. Up until Nemesis.
Why wouldn't they give an intrepid or galaxy class quantums? I mean they're better than photons, yet they wouldn't give them to an intrepid? ya, w/e.
A cloaking device would be oh so most useful on ANY class of starship...why wouldn't an intrepid or galaxy class get one? If you want to keep ALL your ships up with the times, you have to upgrade them. If that means a load of Quantums and a cloaking device, then Starfleet will equip them. |
The only ship allowed to have a cloaking device within the Federation is the USS Defiant, as stated in a treaty with the Romulans.
That being said, I'd want a Sovereign class ship. As Prankishsmart said, it's the flagship. It's more powerful than any other Federation ship, is one of the fastest (Prometheus is the fastest) and has great shields, (Yes, it has something like 5 to 10mm of ablative hull armour).

The Galaxy class ship isn't that old...Why wouldn't they build more? It's a humongous ship, holds so many laboratories, and has araments up the whazoo when it comes to weapons. I think they still do. It's not that old.
To keep the fleet up to standards with any opposing threat of superior weapons, it makes sense to update the ships with quantums, not saying that they DO, but it would make sense. And proving that it is possible for more than just a couple of classes to have quantums.
Yes, while I understand that the USS Defiant is the only ship to have a cloaking device in the treaty, the discussion was aimed at "Any ship is capable of having one," not, "We are going to equip all ships to violate the treaty."

Frankly it seems irrelevant to even ask if they are capable since it wouldn't happen. Unless, of course, the Federation wants all out war with the Romulan Empire and if that happened I doubt they'd have the time to recall and refit all their ships with them.
I'm sure they could figure out a way for their ships though, if they really wanted to.
Just a question though for anyone. Why would Voyager be armed with Tri-Cobalts (being the strongest Federation projectile at the time, I believe) but not quantums?

This is true...and only two of them...
*ponders question* wow, that's a good one. There must have been a calculated "need" that Starfleet figured they might require while attempting to find the Maquis ship in the Badlands...

Quantums hadn't been invented yet. Before VOY's excursion into the Delta I mean.

No when Voyager went missing the difiant was under construction and even though we had not seen a ship with Quantum torpedo's they were all ready invented.Because the Difiant was in 2 or 3 episodes later than when voyager went missing.

The USS Voyager (NCC-74656) was an Intrepid class Federation starship. It was launched in 2371 and was under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway. |

Voyager had already been constructed by the time they were just being deployed. Voyager got lost on its first mission. If it had not, I bet they would have been given quantums.

Galaxy class is only 20 years old or so by the time of nemesis. Construction would continue well into the 25th century. It would probally be mid 25th century before they get decomissioned.
As for converting to photon torpedos, I doubt they would do that unless the federation was facing another foe like the dominion.

Enjoy.
PrankishSmart is right. Why is everyone acting like the Galaxy class is old? The Klingons have been using a BOP for centuries. The Constituion class was not retired for a LONG time too.

Ya...I'm not acting like it's old. It's still an asset to the Federation. Yes it's been around for a while, but not that old. You're right about the Constitution class...There was even an Excelsior class in "Endgame." That's way old...

What was well into the 25th century? Nemesis? No, Nemesis was only the year 2379, I do believe. Stardate 56xxx something... That's still the 24th century.

^galaxy class expected hull life is around 100 years. This should put the life of the class well into at least mid 25th century if production discontinued around the time of nemesis.

ah...ok...where'd you get that info?
Maybe the hull life. But not the technology that's inside of it. It will eventually be way outdated as well as start to malfunction. Bugs will start to pop up in the malfunctioning equipment.
And I'm sure that production of Galaxy classes hadn't stopped by the time Nemesis was made.

Thats why with every new Galaxy class made, they would put updated technology.

This I know...but I was referring to her saying that they might have stopped production of the class and it would need updating anyway.

Ships often go through refit cycles. Minor refits every ~5 years major refits every ~20 years. Although it's not always the same for every ship it just depends on the needs and the circumstances at the time.

If i could i would choose all of them But im am going to go for the Nebula class. It is big, but not the biggest. Its as fast as a Galaxy class (Upgraded warp drive in Season 2 DS9). It is a capable science vessel, is slightly more manouverable than the Galaxy Class and with the Weapons pod fitted it has kick ass armourments! Its not the best, then again its not the worst. So i choose the Nebula Class

Or as needed, I'm sure. I doubt very much that any type of refit is on such a precise schedule.

I would have to say Intrepid class as the fact that I could land the ship on planets instead of having to stay in orbit.
