PostThu Oct 20, 2005 10:58 pm    Voice

I've always wondered about voices. Let's take my voice, for example. When I talk, or when anybody talks, does the person's voice, in this case my voice, sound like when I hear myself AS I talk, or how I hear myself when I hear a recording of myself? Does anybody know???

Nope, sounds a bit different. You know when you answer the phone after the answering machine picks up and it records your convo? Anyways, that happened and I pushed "play message" just to stop it from flashing "new message" and I was slightly surprised, lol.

Exactly what I mean. Does it actually sound like when you hear a recording of yourself, or when you talk and hear yourself talk as you talk? Is hearing a recording of yourself actually the real voice, or is it just how you sound to yourself?

well i suppose i think of like a video camera or something. all my friends sound just like they always normally do when i watch them on a video. when i hear my voice though i feel like it doesn't sound like the way i hear it and i'm like "omg.. that's me...ugh.. how awful!" I personally hate my voice when i hear it -- but i can be extremely critical of myself so *shrugs* oh well -- can;t do much about it!!

Like a phone though -- yea that does sound a little bit different i feel like -- no matter who it is!

When you talk you hear yourself through the inside of your head(your ears pick up the sound from the inside). If you would record yourself on a microphone(one that practically imitates the voice, not like a telephone) and play it, you wouldn't recognize your own voice. You can test that by doing it with someone else who you have known for every long time and let that person record his/her voice as well. That person in question wouldn't recognize their own voice eighter but you do, so you can tell that person this IS his/her actual voice.

I have that very bad. I hear my voice much clearer and brighter from myself but when i hear it recorded its much, much lower then i thought.

As Lionhead said, when you talk, your head modifies what you hear. This also happens to sounds coming from other sources. So if you record your voice, not only does it sound different to you, but different people will hear the recording differently (although the differences are small).

You're all saying what I know. What I'm wondering is WHICH voice is the right voice.

Well . . . neither. They're both your voice.

It was like that episode of Voyager, "Deadlock," in which the ship was duplicated but they shared an antimatter supply. Both were the real Voyager.

The one that is recorded of course . Its quite simple. If someone would confirm it for you there is no doubt.

Its logical to think other people won't hear your voice from inside their ears, like you do yourself.

No need to roll your eyes.
What I'm wondering is if you hear a recording of yourself, do you actually hear it like everyone else hears it, or because it is your voice and you're hearing your voice is it a bit different from the way everyone else hears your voice, because you are, in fact, listening to a recording of YOUR voice? That's what I'm wondering.

When listening to a recording, you hear what they hear. The only time you don't hear what everyone else hears is when it's coming out of your mouth... The only reason the word "different" can be applied is because of the hearing of yourself.

Well it really depends on how good of a microphone you are recording yourself with, and the clarity of the playback. Obviously a *beep* mic, and/or playback won't give you an accurate portrayal.
