PostFri Oct 21, 2005 2:17 pm    Ranks on Voyager

I always find that Janeway assigned the ranks really strange. For example: Harry and Tom. Harry is assigned to Voyager, from the Academy. Tom is assigned to Voyager from prison camp. So, how could it be that Tom is an Luitenant and Harry an Ensign? I find that so strange... I always find that Tom had to be the Ensign and Harry the Luitenant. But, that's just my oppinion...

I think she assigned the ranks right. Tom was in startfleet before harry so Tom has more knowledge than Harry. Also Harry is fresh out of the acadmy.

Ya. The ranks are fair. Tom had experience with Starfleet. Harry was fresh out of the Academy. He needed his time in rank, and to gain experience to move forward in the rank. Not only that, but it's probably the same as why B'Elanna got Lieutenant as well...being the CHIEF pilot of the ship might require a certain rank. Lieutenant, for example. In the case of a Chief Engineer, they have to be a Lieutenant before they can be THE CHIEF Engineer.

No, well. Maybe. I think Kim should have gotten a Promotion. Or at least a medal or something for holding out that long as an ensign.

For holding out as long as he did? If that's the only reason, then no, he shouldn't. You work your way up the ranks by earning the right to promotion. Granted, he did that time and again, but Janeway can't just promote everybody as if she were in the Alpha Quadrant and could replace more senior members of her crew for junior ones. If she promoted everybody that deserved it there would be too many high ranking individuals and there wouldn't be an effective chain of command. Chain of Command is VERY important when on a ship. (Yes, I am also talking about today's navy...they stress the IMPORTANCE of chain of command...which would make sense that it's important in the future.)

^^^But if you read the book "Endgame" based EXACTLY off of the finale, (I'm only a few chapters into it) it goes to describe that Harry was really the only person to stay in Starfleet for the rank. That he really wanted it.

Other than the doctor he stayed at Starfleet Medical, but he's not in it for rank. Harry was.

Yeah, eventually he got what he wanted. But not even a small token of appreciation?

He got plenty of appreciation. He got command of the night shift...which meant the ship was his to control. He got to command the Nightingale, which he so named...

I'm sure people on the lower decks, out of the spotlight compared to Harry, felt the same thing. So it's all the same really.

"Holding out"??!! at the end of the day there are only finite numbers of senior officers on a ship, he couldnt be promoted..

Personeely I think Janeway did it right, all the officers she assigned to key positions had the experiance for that role, and in the circumstances thats the best she could have done.

Kim didn't hold out all the time and all the way. In the disease he shouted at the captain like mad and in front of the other senior officers.

But that wasn't about his rank...so how does that apply? And if you remember, she got back in his face and pulled him into her ready room, where the "yelling" was then stopped by Janeway where she scolded him in private. Just like a Captain is supposed to do. And, not to mention the fact that Harry was under the influence of "The Disease." So, it's not like he was at complete fault that he yelled at her. He was under the influence of...sex.

don't forget that tuvok was opposed to janeways selection of chakotay and tuvok had been in starfleet along time he did one tour of duty in the 23rd century under then captain sulu so he may have felt justified in his oppositin also mr carey assumed he would get the role of chief engineer. but blanna got it who had only been at the academy for 3years if memory serves, if im wrong pls post but tom had earned his posting and harry had accepted that there were not many positions but he would also know that he would get a promotion when they returned to earth you could say he was the sulu from kirks ship ambitious to be a captain

If i'm not wrong, then Tom never finsished it, in fact, he was only on the academy for a few months. Maybe Tom was in the academy before Harry, but Harry finsished the Academy. *Beside, Harry is smarter the Tom <kidding*

Well, Tom started out as an observer ONLY. Then, he was given the rank of Ensign for some time............and FINALLY he gained Lieutenant status.

I think the ranks were fair.....but I agree that Kim should've received a commendation or something toward the end...

Yes, he started as an observer, but then he was granted field commission of Lieutenant, where he was then busted down to Ensign in the episode "30 Days." Then in "Unimatrix Zero pt I" he was put back up to Lieutenant.

i think harry should have be promoted to Lt. because he was i guess "the chief ops. officer" and he was an importante accet to voyager. and its only fair that b'ellena be chief engineer because she was a better engineer.

I guess I always wondered why Harry wasn't the Chief Ops.. Cuz who would be, if it wasn't him? Or can an Ensign also be the Chief of Ops?

I would have to say that he was chief of ops. Why wouldn't an ensign be chief of ops? I mean, if he's more than qualified and has an expertise in the are of it, then why not? I vote that he is chief of operations. Because he was the officer on the SENIOR STAFF that operated the ops console. Therefore being the "senior officer" for operations. (even though he was a junior officer, he would be considered the senior officer OF operations.)
