At the end of "The Netural Zone" Picard says "Set Velocity to warp 6" but... you can't set velocity to warp 6.....

Maybe Picard didn't watch Bill Nye when he was a kid?

Wow, if only I stayed in my physics class my senior year in High School. She was saying something like there is a difference between velocity and speed, or something like that. And you really can say velocity, b/c it is not just about speed. It's the direction and stuff in which an object is traveling... So, technically it's not a screw up.
What is a major screw up in season 1, "Encounter at Farpoint," is when they set the phasers to fire that energy beam, or whatever, to the planet and the phasers fire from that little window on the bottom of the saucer instead of the ACTUAL phaser strip...

Velocity is a vector quantity, meaning it has a magnitude (which can be a speed) and then a direction. Eg; 15 m/s [E].
Considering that it's called "warp speed," and it's a mathematical expression of how many times faster than the speed of light you're going (with no mention of direction), I think it's just the writers once again confusing speed with velocity--it happens everyday. It's not a very major mistake, but it's fun to poke anyway.

that's why I said it is technically not a screw up. I wasn't saying it wasn't...but ne way...Ya. I thought Velocity was something like that. I just wish the teacher was better at teaching the stuff. She knew what she was doing, she just couldn't teach it, so I had to get out.
