why was chakotay made first officer?
he's hardley ever in it, and when he is, he just goes on about meditation and spirits.
chackotey was a great character at the beginning, but as time went on, he rarely was shown. He occasionly appeared in the last 2 minutes of an episode.
I think Tuvok should have been promotedd. He defenetly has more of an impact in the show.

My thoughts exactly. Tuvok is way better than Chakotay. Chakotay's my least fave character on voyager.

Chakotay was made first officer because he USED to be a Starfleet officer. So he knew the tricks of the trade. He was the Maquis commanding officer...that's why. Janeway needed a..."representative" if you will, at her side to show that she was fair and not going to mistreat the Maquis. Someone who could let them know that everything was fine. A "liason" if you will.

And the reason he hardly ever fills the position is b/c the producers just let his character slip away...That is retarded. He was a great first officer until the producers just pretty much killed him.

Its spelled Chakotay. If you're going to bash him, at least spell his name right.

Like Voyager2004 said, he was the First Officer because he had been the Captain to the Maquis. Since it was Janeway's ship, he was forced to drop a rank. If Janeway and Tuvok ran the ship together, then the Maquis would have rebelled.

I think the better question is: Why did they let Janeway stay as Captain?

Chakotay plays a huge part in the series, he's on the show just as much as any other character.

I agree on two counts: Chakotay was an excellent character to begin with, and the writers did pretty much kill him for no apparent reason... that ticks me off bigtime... he just became the character they used if they wanted someone to have a random romance with an alien or something... I think that he and Janeway complimented each other well as a command team. Aside for the fact the the Maquis would have rebelled had he not been in that position, I think that he was a better candidate than Tuvok. Chakotay appeals to Janeway's humanity, he helps her to remember that she is a person aswell as a Captain. Had Tuvok been in his position, Janeway would have lost it with regulations and whatnot altogether... Janeway allows herself to be Kathryn when she's with Chakotay and I don't think that even a character as strong of hers would have managed to live 7 years behind that Captain's mask without a break...

Chackotay complimented her perfectly, if only they hadn't made his character such a wet sponge most of the time... that's why I loved it when he showed a bit of backbone in Scorpion I!

Good Argument. Chakotay, did have several good moments and episodes. I dont think there is a real problem with the character per se.

Hey now Founder , I like DS9 lol.....

I think the writers should have built his character more. Chakotay is so hot! I was mad at RB but I knew until I hear him say what people are saying, what he said. I won't believe it. I was too quick to judge, hell I shouldn't even judge. Bad Deb.
I forgot, I already done said those things. I got to remember not to repeat myself.

I like Chakotay. He had a good character. He had good moments. He could have had a couple more of them, but that's on the writers etc...

I didn't mind DS9...I just haven't seen NEAR as much of it as VOY.

I encourage the sprituality of Trek. I think it's great!

Janeway was a good captain,chakotay was a good first officer for the first few seasons.But they did put his character on the back burner a lot,and only brought him out in the end to be a love interest for seven-REDICULOUS!!!!

The only reason I like Chakotay or even tolarate him is because I'm in love with J/C and the stories that creates....I love Fanfic..hee hee..But Then my feelings for Chakotay change so often I can hardly keep up with myself it's just one of those things......

The only way I love Chakotay is with Kathryn Janeway apart from her he is nothing...I'm a hopeless J/Cer what can I say....

*I know I contradict myself and sometimes don't even make any sense....like I said it's one of those things....
