Opera have finally removed the banner ad's and license fee from it's browser.

Opera has removed the banners, found within our browser, and the licensing fee. Opera's growth, due to tremendous worldwide customer support, has made today's milestone an achievable goal.

I've never heard of Opera before.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing. I'm not very familiar with Opera. All I really know is that Firefox is probably the best thing available at the moment, and IE and AOL either need to totaly re-do their programs or go away.

But that's just my take on things.

It depends on who you ask. Some people are very attached to their browsers. For example: I am very attached to my Firefox right now...

That's not a question you can answer, it's a subjective judgement.

Basically, Anything > IE. Both Opera and Firefox are fine in my book, it really depends on which you prefer. The idea is not to have a monopoly, but to browse happy. One of my personal reasons for not using Opera (except for testing purposes) were the ads, now that this impediment is gone, it's just another reason to use it.

Exactly. It's just a preferance.

I'm an Opera fan, but I think people get down on IE without too much evidence.

Frankly, if you keep IE, along with Windows, updated, and you have a non-pirated copy of windows, then you'll have a decent browser. I use Opera simply because I like the all-in-one format, and the fact that the program doesn't run incredibly top-heavy like Firefox did.

Firefox is easy to use, while Opera seems to offer better technology. The voice commands are extra spiffy, I like both. Firefox is a little more streamlined, though.

Hmm . . . then that huge pile of evidence lying in my backyard must be for the other terrible browser called Internet Explorer.

Where . . . hmm . . . how about web standards? Imagine if everyone had their own design of an internal combustion engine? Or if every appliance manufacturer produced plugs with different numbers of prongs? That doesn't happen because there are certain standards--an engine, while it may vary from model to model, remains basically the same. Plugs generally have two or three prongs in North America--you certainly don't see a seven-pronged plug on one oven and a two-pronged plug on another. The web has standards too.

Internet Explorer takes those standards, spits on them, throws them out the window, shoots them in the leg, and buries them in a very deep hole. It renders things wrong. Why is this important? Because if the browser doesn't follow standards, then all those people who put time into making a web site accessible to as many people as they can have put all that work into it for naught. Internet Explorer hinders accessibility, making it more difficult for people to use the Internet--especially those with a disability, such as the visually impaired.

Don't get me started on transparent PNGs. Portable Network Graphics are an image format. Like GIF or JPEG. And, according to their specs, they support alpha transparency, which not only means I can have part of the image transparent, but I can have percentages of transparency. When it works properly, it's more than pretty nifty, it's awesomely cool. Enter Internet Explorer. Even after six versions, it still doesn't support transparent PNGs. It is not the job of the browser to dictate whether or not an image should support transparency. A browser is a tool, that should work with every format the way it is supposed to. But no, Internet Explorer insists that PNGs should not be transparent.

Security is also an issue, although as you pointed out, a normal, up-to-date version of Internet Explorer is no more unsafe than any other browser. Except for ActiveX. You see, Microsoft has this method of interactively presenting content on the web called ActiveX controls. These controls, unfortunately, present a security risk.

Most versions of IE now come with security controls to automatically disable ActiveX on any page unless you allow it. There are two problems with this approach. Firstly, it still means that ActiveX on allowed pages can still get to your computer. Secondly, some idiots can disable the security settings, allowing any ActiveX control to run unhindered. With any other browser, this doesn't happen simply because they don't support ActiveX (it's proprietary Microsoft code). That's just one particularly horrid example of Microsoft's haphazard security style.

Internet Explorer is the idiot's browser. It is in no way a finely-crafted, beautiful tool that I would be proud to use each day. It is a clunky piece of cobbled-together corporate technology that ignores the rules of the land and thinks it should be the one to set the standards, which is like saying that a window should be able to choose what people can see. It is just a tool, but it's not a very good one.
