The Lost Worlds Fleet

On stardate 72345.5 the Tholian vessel Semarakin entered the Sylvian system, a trinary system located 5 lightyears outside federation space. The Semarkin�s orders were to carry out the Sylvian Experiment.

The Sylvian experiment was intended to open a wormhole that by manipulating the subspace eddies the Tholians could change the end location, thus giving them a huge tactical advantage over all Alpha Quadrant Species, and potentially beyond. With this wormhole the Tholians would be able to strike at any target, anywhere, anytime. The only thing that they needed for this would be the gravitational pull of a Trinary star�the only one nearby is in the Sylvian system.

Starfleet Intelligence found out about this just in time and despatched starships Siege and Aranna to stop the Semarakin. The starships did not arrive in time. When the Semarakin fired the missile, it triggered an unexpected overload in subspace, creating a large subspace shockwave, destroying everything in its path, i.e. everything in the system.

When the Siege and the Aranna arrived the found nothing in the system, no planets, no debris, no ships, no stars� the only thing they did find, after exploring the system, was a wormhole. Starfleet intelligence feared that the Tholians had completed their mission and so immediately despatched a fleet of ships to the area in order to secure it against possible Tholain intervention.

Starfleet decided that they should try and utilise this wormhole, not as a tactical weapon, but as a deterrent against future war making races, still believing it to be what the Tholians had planned. Starfleet eventually decided to make sure that the wormhole was what they thought it was, what they found was very different. Instead of finding a wormhole with one controllable end, they found a wormhole with hundreds of ends, each sprouting off from each other, hundreds and hundred were being recorded every second and more were being formed, each of these leading a different location.

Starfleet immediately began to fortify the area against any hostile action. But Starfleet no longer saw this as a tactical advantage; they saw it as an exploratory opportunity. Starfleet decided that it would be unfair to keep this opportunity to themselves, so they decided to invite representatives from the Romulans and Klingons to take advantage of this, providing of course that all three races share their information.

Starfleet decided that they could not afford to have ships permanently holding station keeping at the mouth of the wormhole. They quickly realised that with this many exits to the wormhole there could be any number of hostile species on the other side, therefore the decision to fortify the wormhole was taken.

Starfleet Department of Research & Development spent many months attempting to design a way of blocking the mouth of the wormhole and any other form of securing it.

They eventually came up with Iris Station. Iris station was designed to encircle the mouth of the wormhole, with defences both inside and outside the wormhole. Iris station has the ability to physically block the mouth of the wormhole, both by using a physical gate or �Iris� hence the name and by use of a powerful forcefield. This combined with four structures attached to the station that were actually inside subspace, each fitted with phasers and a pulse resonator, capable of forcing the wormhole back into subspace for a short period of time.

Along with this there are multiple W-J5 subspace installations, smaller circular installations used for security, mapping of the wormhole, scientific research and restricting access to certain areas of the wormhole. These small installations are usually unmanned, but can support a crew of 20 for scientific research and mapping expeditions. These installations can be used to stop, or at least slow down any enemy vessels or as the case was found to be, allied vessels.

A few months after the construction of Iris Station an exit in the wormhole was found to lead to 2293. Starfleet decided to inform the Starfleet of that era about the existence of the wormhole. That era�s Starfleet sent a small fleet and a small Regula class starbase to their end of the wormhole. After much deliberation that era�s Starfleet was allowed to explore the wormhole by this era�s Starfleet. But it was decided as a possible contaminant to the timeline to allow ships to other to other time periods. So, the W-J5 installations were modified to scan a ships temporal signature and restrict access to exits that were not of that vessels timeline.

Due to the nature of the wormhole both era�s Starfleets decided to highly classify the wormhole and to �lose� their respective fleets and keep them highly classified and on a need to know basis. This earned the fleet the nickname �The Lost Fleet.�
