There has been some creative stuff done in them (my favorite being the Captain Proton monochromatic environment) but have you ever wondered why they never choose things that they really couldn't do in real life. For example, if I were able to use a holodeck I would have taken the form of godzilla and went rampaging through tokyo, or a more modern example (on the star trek line) taking the form of the crystalline entity and and rampaging throughout the Alpha Quadrant.

Or even the tactical possibilities, the captain could use the holodeck to gain a better vantage point of a battle being (this one could be explained by the fact that holodecks require obscene amounts of energy but the advantages of being able to step outside the ships and watch a battle from a manipulative vantage point might outweight the costs).

Absolutely!!!

I have to say though that all the Holo Novels run by voyager sucked!!! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!

If I could make Holo Novels I would make like NFL football games, where I was the Quarter Back, I would make like Water Skiing and stuff like that. But everything sucked.

Except Belannas Orbital Sky Diving. Now that is fun!

Voyager has many novels in its database, however the people like Tom Paris likes the Captain Proton, which is in a way showing his Veiws of the Past.

Note: I moved this topic to Startrek Tech, because the conversation involved Trekkie Technology.

Here something I find about Holodeck.

The generic name, especially in use aboard Federation starships, for the "smart" virtual reality system as evolved by the 2360s a technology that combines transporter, replicator, and holographic systems. The programs, projected via emitters within a specially outfitted but otherwise empty room, can create both "solid" props and characters as well as holographic background to evoke any vista, any scenario, and any personality all based on whatever real or fictional parameters are programmed. While personal holoprograms relieve the stress and isolation of shipboard life for crew personnel, Holodecks are also used for tasks ranging from scientific simualtion to tactical or even covert training. Off starships, many commercial users have equipped facilities with so-called Holosuites.

What I don't understand is how someone can shape a holographic character to be just like a real person - it would take a long time to program in all of the right parameters, I would think...

This is still sci-fi: I find the concept of a holodeck a bit dubious even for future technology. I can imagine using electrical and chemical stimulation of the brain to create a new kind of VR, but the whole hologram thing is a bit surreal. They can work wonders with computers though.

So if the holodeck is replicating real props, (ex. chair, table, book....) then why cant these props leave the holodeck? For example, when picard was trying to convince a hologram that it couldnt leave the holodeck, he tossed a book out the door. It dissapeared once outside the holodeck. If that book was a replicated prop, then shouldnt it have stayed solid?
