Subspace is the space between real space and warp. It's like insta transmission.

This is something that's always puzzled me right from the first episodes...
Why does a starship need to have its impulse engines online constantly in order to move???...can't it just drift along??....I remember a few episodes from the 1st Gen...where the enterprise used to come to a dead halt whenever there was a power drain...

yeah its one of those things that help with the drama. Like phaser sounds in space when you can't really hear sound in space

Yeah.....and those dramatic whooshing sounds when they show a starship zooming by at warp 9.
I guess it would be pretty dull to watch star trek with the mute button on....

~scratches his chin~ Or maybe we're hearing the subspace wakes left by the ship as it passes. It's possible.

But then what about the engine hum that we hear when the voyager crawls along at half impulse???....like in the intro...
Ahhh forget it....I guess nobody's perfect......

But I do remember one episode...The Void..I think...when voyager was passing thru empty space....towards the end...when they were trying to enter the Temporal Vortex...the alien freighter disabled voyager's engines and Tom yelled "We're moving only on inertia, captain"....
So I guess the production team had better make up it's mind.

Its all in effect. In the intro to TNG, you can't hear anything in space, but yet you hear the Enterprise passing by. Or, the phaser sounds, your not supposed to hear phasers when the camera angle zoomed outside the ship. They just do this to make the show more interesting.

And the dealy with inertia, (in star trek technical terms) I'm sure there is a back-up system so that when the engines stop, the ship system automatically causes a negative push on the ship. EX. -- The ship travels at full impulse, then the captain says stop, the engines are cut, then the system causes the manuevering thrusters to push backwards.-- So, I guess then when Paris said "We're running on Inertia," either the system was damaged, or they cut it. I don't know, I'm taking a guess.

The reverse thruster theory is plausible....but in most episodes, when there's a power drain....we're talking about a complete loss of power, people. No lights, no life-support, no nothing. And if i'm correct impulse draws about 35% of the power output....can't figure out how that would still work during a complete blackout....

I want to say that the Enterprise D is so heavy that it just doesn't move at all, but the Law of Inertia (An object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by a net force) says otherwise. Maybe there is an autoforce that has a seperate power supply? There are systems that are not connected to the primary fusion reactors, so they work seperately?

BTW, I would love to have debates with you, you sound like you know what your talkin' bout.

Hey thanks.. ...why don't you try Dax Orion's slipstream forum...we need ideas there,....
Through Newton's law.....all it would take would be a slight thrust to get a starship moving....or change it's velocity in the same direction..
But what bugs me is when it's in motion.......
Voyager weight 100,000 tonnes....the amount of momentum possed by it at even impulse- level velocities would be huge....so to stop it we would need pretty powerful drives....... and if we had a source that could produce such a huge negating force...apart from the mair core engines........i guess it wouldn't have been much of a problem to throw in life-support....or lights too...

Or maybe its some type of negative field that i've never heard about....

in space, there is no weight...

I know that....but I'm talking about momentum and inertia....which have no relation with weight.....but mass.

Perhaps something like a field around the ship. Like in order to have warp speed, you require a stable warp field around the ship. Maybe there is a field around the ship that helps control the momentum. This is a very questioning subject.

the way you were putting it before made it sound like the weight of voyager is what gave it it's momentum...

if you don't believe me go back and look at your last post

I guess it's pretty sensible to have such a backup....in case of a drain, it's better to stay put in one place rather than go drifting along...

In space there is no air right, it's a complete vacume. So there is no need to wory about air friction and stuff like that. Then there is no need to worry about gravity because there is no gravity in space away from the pull of planets. The warp field idea works for me because the firld could allow the ship to slip in to subspace where there is no friction and the engines can propell the ship faster than light. This I can see working now, the creating a warp field is the only problem there. But the point I have been building to (Yes i am finaly there) is when Voyager lands on planet surfaces. How would Vouager have taken off again, the thrusters and impulse engines alone would possibly damage the planets atmophere because they were designed to work in space. It is here that the weight problem becomes an issue (Link, the Hero of Time) what do you all think?

Firstly, when Voyager lands on a planet, 2/3rd of its weight..(WEIGHT!!!)...is supported by force fields....

It's atmospheric thrusters are capable of re-entry and escape velocity..

As for the polluting problem, the Intrepid class's raised-wing configuration is designed to recycle harmful emmisions for warp and impulse cores into harmless by-products...
That's why it can cross the warp 5 speed limit withour polluting space-time.

Voyager's folding wing-and-nacelle warp drive system allows the starship to exceed the warp 5 "speed limit" without polluting the space continuum.

Accordingto Newton , a vessle dhuld keep going indefinatly unless some outside force affects it. What Star Trek did judt gives me a headache!
