In space there in no salt ar any crystal for a laser beam ect to refract off and there is really no way due to this that the light form a beam could reach janeways eyes so why do they vissually instead of having a sensor pick up the fire.

You are correct, phasers and other light sources would only produce visible beams when shot through a nebul or a gas cloud.

You are right unless phasers are you typical light beam...they proablly are. Its proabbly for dramtic effect like there being a whoosh whenever a ship passesby hte screen.

get a lazer pen and use it when its foggy you can see the beam. Use the lazer pen when its clear you only see the lil red dot on the wall. thats what they are trying to say

I know that but if a phaser has soild energy in it it would appear solid no matter what.

The whole thing is odd if you ask me, but still light from a phaser shouldn't be able to reach janeways eyes.

phasers are not lasers remember. just because a laser pointer or light doesent show a lisible 'beam', it doesent mean that a phaser would work on the same principle. think of a nebulae with charged light particles. a phaser beam could contain some light particles (glow in the dark).

I agree.
Also a phaser may not even be light. It may be a stream of energy. In ST phasers are never totally explaned - at least to my knowledge.

1) It's phased light
2) In a nebula, there is dust. Not that much in open space.

mm i agree with the pure energy idea because its more relistic but im interested in the phased light. it might be where they got the name phaser from ???

I still son't understand the phased-light thing - I still belive that a phaser is something like a stream of energy (which like is...but...you know what I mean.)

Yeah no kidding
Phasing deals with light curves, like so:
It's kind of hard to explain. Esseintially it's the alignment of light waves in a certain way. There are tools (like phase microscopes) based on this principle. Even if it was in fact a beam of "energy" that energy would most likely be in form of photons.

So what your saying is that a phaser is like a laser in that the bend and twist the photons into a certin pattern. Am I correct?

But I am still confused. What is the difference then? Futher, the difference of a phaser and a disruptor?

Are you saying that there have to be particles before you can get a visual

Well unless you can track light which move around 3000000 kilometers a second (we think ) u can't see it! Unless it hits minute particles like dust.

Maybe the phasers/light are just added for a tv episode and not real life

One cannot "track" light. If you "track" it with the abovementioned speed, it would still travel at that sped relatively to you.
