PostFri Apr 26, 2002 7:45 am    Sound in space?

Why, when phasers/photon torperdoes/tractor beams etc. are used is their a sound? space is a vaccuum and does not transmit sound. so why do we hear noises?

Anyone notice how the only time in any star trek where they mention any directive is when they are about to break it?

As it said in the Topic "Transwarp" it does that to make it more dramatic.

yeah, thats true, i haven't seen any science fiction show that doesn't have sounds in outspace, it is a way to be more dramatic.

The sound is added to make it more amusing.

I think the producers or whoever once answered this question and I think they said something like this:

"A photon torpedo just wouldn't be quite right, would it?"

Yeah, I had a few thoughts about that. The torpedo, being a cluster of photons, whould always travel at light speed. According to special relativity, it will ALWAYS travel at the speed of light, realtive to anything. Therefore, you cannot outrun/outmauever (which happens on all the time on the show) it at just about any speed. Warp is another factor. Since warp is supposed to be faster than light, photon torpedoes will be useless while in subspace. But we still see them being launched during warp flights! If warp theory is right, they would never exit the tubes.

here is something the torpedoes have to go faster than the speed of light, or the ship would get hit by its own torpedoe if it didn't..

then how could it hit a ship that is at warp? It can't catch it.

I agree. The torpedo would never even leave the tube if the vessle is traveling a above warp 1.

the photon torpedoes have a sort of warp field.

torpedoes generate their own warp field, thats why you will never see phasers used at warp, because phasers cannot generate a warp field

Photon Torpedeos only go warp 1 (smae as phasers which are light and have to travel at light speed.

Quite unlikely physics-wise but still a possibility
