The first adventure of the USS Stargazer under the command of Jean Luc Picard. This book boroows heavily from every episode regarding the Galactic Barrier in TOS. Anyone who has seen them will remember the episodes where Gary Mitchell turned into the superhuman/telekinetic/mindreading monstrosity and the one where the Kalandans boarded the Enterprise and turned everyone into little cubes (tecnically they were tetrahedrons but...). Valiant just starts with the ideas presented in those episodes and elaborates on them.
Basically, the Valiant disappeared hundreds of years before Kirk discovered its warning buoy about entering the galactic barrier. Its message detailed the struggle to regain control of a doomed ship from a former crewman who had become to dangerous to remain alive. The captain of the ship sacrificed the Valiant to save humanity. Starfleet assumed the ship was lost with all hands, but now a pair of unusual humans arrive at Starbase 209 claiming to be the descendants of the Valiant. Whats more, they also claim an invasion force is being amassed by a dangerously hostile species known as the Nuyyad. Starfleet dispatches the Valiant to investigate.
Under some unusual circumstances Picard must take command of the ship, and keep it. Not only is there the threat of the Nuyyad, the untrustworthy human woman who has been assigned to help them, and a Kalandan with his own agendas but Picard must also worry about mutineers and saboteurs from his own crew.
Obviously we all know the ending...Picard has to survive in order for TNG to take place, but it was a good read anyway. We also know the Stargazer was later damaged beyond repair in a battle with the Ferengi. Nothing on the seat of your chair about it but it was good nonetheless.

Star Trek: Stargazer books one and two have been released. Book one is called Gauntlet and book 2 is called Progenitor. I haven't read them yet because I'm reading the Dominion War series right now.
