The newest New Frontier book, "Being Human", was really cool. It left some people ambiguously dead (not mentioning names), but was overall really good.
Here's the simplest way to describe the plot: Star Trek meets Stargate. (The movie, not SG-1). Of course, its not a crossover....but, read it and you'll understand.
Its based off the premise of a single TOS episode: the one where Kirk meets Apollo.
It also has some great quotes where it makes fun of ST itself: "What does Starfleet have against seat restraints!", and things like that.
I suggest you read it, its really cool.
