Allright, well, it was only a matter of time before I hit up this part of the forums. Some of you may remember me, some may not. I'm probably second only to squiggy in RPG's that have been made and then shut down a few weeks later. The other thing I was famous for was extremely long, tedious first posts with lots and lots of information. Look up my last incarnation of the USS Galaxia, and you'll see what I mean.
Onto the point of this topic. Right now, I want to know who is still an active RP'er on the forums. If we got one started up, I would for sure get in on it. But, who else do we have here. I'm not going to bother making a poll, because I want people to actually post in here, as opposed to voting, then leaving.

Very much depends. I probably won't join a Trek RPG. But if you create something original, I might be interested.

Thats the big thing I'd be thinking about. I've been trying to think of something new and original that's not Trek. I know a few things that have been tried are Star Wars (for those of us who remember Republican Man), I myself have tried a Stargate, and I know we had a Matrix RPG a while back. Honestly, I think it'd be cool to do a Matrix RPG, but I want to get input from everyone.

Probably wouldn't join a Matrix RPG either. While the Matrix is way f'in cool, I'm looking for something more original. That is, an RPG that isn't based on a movie or series. Because then there's so much more you can do with it.

I suppose if we do a round robin here, we can all pitch ideas and form the premise for our own RPG scenerio. It is always more interesting when we get to create the world and its rules ourselves. You would have course want to stick with a sci fi genre?

Yes. Well, not necessarily. But that would probably suit more people, this being a Star Trek fansite. I was thinking something in the not-too-distant future...couldn't hope to think of any further details at 3 o' clock in the morning.

Would you want it to be affected by current events and where we end up on our current course or just a world that occurs somewhere in the future?

I'd be partial to either a trek, or fantasy RP. Matrix, I'd be a bit worriesome about. It would be kinda meh, I would think. lol

Well, let's everyone brainstorm. I'm liking the whole not too distant future idea. I'd even go as far to say that we should restrict this to earth. No space travel. It'd make things a bit easier in my opinion.

That could be cool. I'm also thinking something dystopic and dark. Perhaps even apocalyptic.

And the beauty of this is, since we're not doing the whole Star Trek theme, we don't need a whole lot of people. We can get along with four or five people. I imagine we'll need one or two people to play multiple characters so we can have the opposition as well. Definitely go with the more experienced RPer's for this. I didn't have work today, so I've had the gears turning in my head, and I'll get a small summary of my basic idea on here within a few hours. We can tweak from there if we want to.

Ok, basic idea.
World War 3 scenario, except we've had multiple nuclear strikes, so there's not much left in the world. Sides would basically follow World War 2, but we can obviously have mercenaries that'd fight for either side. Instead of all-out warfare, I'm thinking we should have more of a guerilla warfare. Maybe even have the "good guy" be the smaller force using guerilla tactics against the larger "bad guy." Obviously, weaponry in this RPG would pretty much be modern day weaponry. Rifles and guns. No fancy lasers.
So, what do we all think.

I agree. This is something separate from Trek or any other series. I suppose. Characters will be made and picked up by players as necessary. Should there be some reference to weapons and technology that would exist in this WWIII scenerio, but that now we have not yet perfected. I can always do a little research there. Also, if there has been multiple nuclear attacks, while there be any sort of physical consequences for the people left alive on the planent? Then again, nuclear radiation was used as the excuse for all sorts of horror films back in the fifties and sixties, so it may be better to stay away from that and avoid being cliche. What would be the incident that set off the fighting?

Well, for weapons, I was thinking it would be mostly current day. Obviously, there would be some advances in weaponry, but nothing too major. As to the consequences of nuclear strikes, such as fallout and radiation, I agree with you that it's overdone, and I don't want to really touch that. We could have an underlying sub-plot with that, leading to something dramatic later on, but even that may be a bit cliche. And as for doing research, if I'm going to get involved with the RPG (which I plan to; I want to be the one to make it), I want to do a majority of the research on my own. Any input would be appreciated, but I guess you could call it a personality defect. I like going all out on info. For example, see my last foray into RPG: The USS Galaxia

If you want to take on the research yourself, thank you. I am quite deep into the internship at the moment, so my research would most likely not be the most complete. If there is anything I can look up or help with, let me know. I do want to be involved in making this happen. While we may not want to worry about nuclear fallout and such, we may want to consider chemical warfare. I would assume such tactics would still be in use and that could cause differences in how the characters interact with their environment.
...maybe I am over-thinking this one way too much.

For starters, I haven't thought too much prologue-wise. I'm going to start working on that, but I want to get the heart of the RPG done first. As for the Future Soldier, obviously we're going to have something like that, but I'm thinking it's going to be more of a given rather than something special. I'm working on this as I have time, so I'll hopefully have a better idea by early next week.

Do you want us to support writing samples or anything before we ask to join the roleplay? Sorry, just have to ask. I know some people like for that to be done and I want to make sure I am going about joining in the correct manner. I do look forward to seeing this start, whether I am a part of it or not. It seems like it will be an interesting story to watch develop.

Pretty cool stuff. Nice to see some activity going on in the RPG area. I'd be open to joining if the story was solid.

^Ditto
In fact, Founder and I have been developing a similar dystopian/post-apocalyptic story ourselves. Here's a little bit of what we've been working on, if you want to incorporate into the story.
Okay, so, it's Earth, circa 2050 or so. The world as we know it is gone (war, economic problems, natural disasters, etc. did us in). It has been replaced by disorganized, highly territorial and dangerously idealistic factions who are fighting for dominance. In Europe, we were thinking the British National Party (that's code for the British Neo-Nazis) were able to make it to the top of the charts, so to speak, thanks to a charismatic leader and a powerful propaganda machine. A prophet claiming to be the prophet Muhommad reborn has claimed control of the area with his fanatical base of followers. Africa's a war zone, split up between genocidal military leaders. Asia has become a technological haven (think cyberpunk). And, good ole America is... well, it's been broken up into all different kinds of things. Anyways, our basic idea was that a mysterious unidentified flying object crashes somewhere on planet Earth. The factions pick up on this and clamor to lay claim to this alien technology before the other factions, giving them the upper-hand in this global cold war.
Anyways, that was just our idea. Feel free to take whatever you like about it, or nothing at all. I'm just happy to be doing an RP again.

It sounds like an interesting idea. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the mysterious alien technology would be or is that to be discovered in the game? Could the technology, perhaps, end up being the opposite of what they believe it is....such as an instrument of creation rather than destruction? It could be interesting to explore how humanity could twist something meant to create to its own purposes or to see how the alien encounter affects humanity. (This is me thinking out loud in a sense. Feel free to ignore)

It'd be interesting to see if we can meld our two ideas together. Like I said, I haven't gotten too much of my storyline down as of yet, and any help in coming up with the story would be greatly appreciated. I can handle the brunt of going out and doing any research we need to do. I can also take care of technology, weapons, and what-not. If you wouldn't mind, La Forge, would you want to handle the storyline of this? I think if we work this out right, we'd have a keeper of an RPG on our hands.

As an interesting idea, technology wise, would it not be interesting if the aliens showing up activated technology already present, but buried in the ground?
Just as an idea. Along the lines of lost-city-of-atlantis rising from the ocean type stuff. Things we can't explain with science as we currently know it lol

It could definately be interesting. I get a distinctive War of the Worlds vibe which we would have to be careful not to stereotype. However, it would be interesting if it was stuff that the humans had found and had not been able to identify or something they had been using for completely different purposes that the function the technology was supposed to serve.
