Quote: | The pirate fiasco ended well for the Americans and thats especially good news for the Obama Administration, writes Times Joe Klein. Its better to be lucky than good. Its even better to be lucky and good. One can easily imagine all the different ways the rescue of Captain Phillips might have been screwed upand the political firestorm that would have resulted. But President Obama appears to have been crisp and decisive throughout But it could easily have gone wrong, through no fault of the President and the SEALsa gust of wind, whateverand then the Administration would have had to waste all sorts of energy on damage control, fending off the second-guessersRepublicans and, all too often, people like meand perhaps overreacting to the pirate threat as a result. Presidencies are, sadly, built or crippled on such quirks of fate. |

I didn't pay a ton of attention to this situation, but I was aware of what was going on, and was quite pleased to turn on the news on Sunday and find that the US Navy had rescued the hostage.

Crisp and decisive... they were only authorized to open fire if the Captain's life was in immediate danger. Luckily, the SEALs have the kind of aim that would stun Hollywood, and all credit should go to them.

Are you positive on that? And if so, how was it determined that the captain's life was finally in danger on Easter Sunday?

Does this have something to do with Easter that I'm not aware of?

From what I recall, a pirate had his AK or some weapon fixed on Captain Phillips' back. That's when the SEALs sniped all three of them.

I'm not certain why the specific mention of Easter was necessary, but from what I saw on the news that evening, one of the Pirates was seen aiming his weapon at the Captain's person (I think it was his back, but my memory on that aspect escapes me). The Naval officer in charge made a judgment call with the evidence at hand, and ordered the SEALs to move in and end the threat.
