PostSun Aug 17, 2008 5:08 pm    Stargate Vs Star Trek

I know it's comparing apples and oranges, and that this is a Trek site, but I'll ask the question anyway.

Which show do you like better?
Reasons, please!

Stargate is looking to be more popular (right now) than Star Trek, with the two new movies out, another on the way, and a new series. Star Trek seems to be stagnant.

I can't really say, I've only seen...maybe five episodes of Stargate, although I did find them enjoyable.

I watched two episodes of stargate, and found neither of them enjoyable. So Star Trek is an epic win in my book.

I just finished watching every episode of both stargate series (all of the ones that are out on dvd) and both of the new movies. Don't get me wrong, I love star trek. That's why I joined this site. But as of right now. Stargate is my number 1 favorite sci-fi series of all time. They have some awesome writers that were with the show for all ten years. I highly recommend that you all watch the entire series.

My favorite thing is how the writers will take a show from say the 2nd season, and write a story the builds off of that show in say the 8th season. I cant wait for the next movie and series, and I hope Atlantis keeps going.

You can't judge a series that has 3 movies and 302 episodes (so far) on the only two episodes that you've watched.

ATM, my vote goes to Stargate! Just because I got tired of watching the old Trek reruns over and over again, when I know what happens in most...and I really love Stargate : Atlantis...haven't missed an episode, whether I got to watch a rerun or not, lol!

Actually, I can. Who the heck are you to tell me how I can and cannot judge something? I didn't find it interesting enough to watch a third episode, because it bored me to no end.

i have to concur with squiggy. while it might be better to give a show 4-5 episodes to catch your interest, sometimes it's just clear that a particular show isn't for you.

i mean, 15,478 episodes of the popular soap opera, Guiding Light, have been made to date. so are you going to watch 100 episodes of Guiding Light before you decide whether you like it or not?

I think Stargate tends to be the better written and usually the more interesting of the two.

But on the other hand they're very different so I can't really say that I like one better than the other.

I wasn't trying to tell you what to do. Stargate has a lot of episodes that are dependent on earlier shows. I'm just saying that if you watched more of it you might like it more. I'm sorry squiggy.

SGA has been cancelled, someone emailed me the link to this site if anyone cares enough. Some crap about 'going out on top'.

Well that's really stupid. It's so successful why stop now? I had heard about the new series and movie, but I would rather just have a few more seasons of Atlantis.

I don't see why they're canceling the show so soon, either. Maybe they feel the Wraith story line is being dragged out too much or something, but since it's kind of coming to a close anyway, they could just create a new arc. Weird.

Sci-Fi seems to be doing this whole "stop before it gets bad" thing a lot lately. SG1 was immensely popular when they canceled it, and this is also BSG's last season, and that's an exceedingly popular show as well. Maybe they're just not interested in investing the money or something like that. I love how Scare Tactics keeps coming back though,

It is weird, I agree to do that to a show, but I can partially agree with ending a Show when it still gets good ratings (and thus sell good on DVDs when they come out), instead of canceling it after over half the audience has lost interest. It might also have something to do with a transition to movies, which I have read that BSG and SG...whatever ones, are considering to do if the current planned releases do well.

I was looking into it some more. I read that a few days after the cancellation was annouced, they green-lighted Star Gate Universe. It will be about a team from earth that activates a dorment anchient ship which is pre-programmed to travel across the universe. They are basically stuck along for the ride and are trying to find a way home.

Sounds like they are running out of show ideas, and stealing them from Voyager.

It will be more complex than that. That's just my brief interpretation. I believe the ship was programmed by the anchients to travel to uncharted space and plant stargates in certain places. It should be good. They are also looking for one cast member to be a well-known actor. Kind of like what they did with RDA in SG-1.

Sounds like it could be good indeed, but you know what would be even better...is if they just kept Atlantis in production! That show was awesome and the cast was great too, now I got to get used to a whole new cast! lol, whatever happened to a good old 7 seasons for a show if it was doing fantastic...like back in the Star Trek days !

You're exactly right. I was not expecting this at all, especially since they let SG-1 go on for ten seasons (it could have gone even longer).

A lot of shows are doing it now, though. I think it's in order to be able to create new shows and still get the same audience (who will obviously be willing to continue watching since they want more) while attracting a new audience at the same time.

I'm thinking that if Janeway had had a stargate, then Voyager would've been a pretty short series... lol

Star Trek, there is no competition in my opinion. I watched Stargate, it was good, but nowhere near the Treks.
