Big news today:
Quote: | Kosovo Declares Independence From Serbia
PRISTINA, Serbia Kosovo declared itself a nation on Sunday, mounting a brash and historic bid to become an "independent and democratic state" backed by the U.S. and key European allies but bitterly contested by Serbia and Russia.
"Kosovo is a republic an independent, democratic and sovereign state," parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi said as the chamber burst into applause after a unanimous vote to approve the document.
Across the capital, Pristina, revelers danced in the streets, fired guns into the air, waved red and black Albanian flags and honked car horns in jubilation at the birth of the world's newest country.

Since my actual views on this spawned quite a rather... fascinating... set of events, I'm just going to wish them the best of luck on this one?

Having been there in 1997, when much of the fight was between the KLA and Serbia, I can say that while this is a good thing in the long run, but I worry about the immediate situation. Violence and reprisals are most assuredly to happen in the weeks and months to come.

We knew it would happen. Violence was a given. Really sad.
"The US is to withdraw all non-essential staff and their families from Serbia amid growing anti-Western violence prompted by Kosovo's declaration of independence at the weekend."

An interesting spin on this tale; Two similar events in the world:
CHINA/Tibet
China's ambassadors approved of Canada's stance on a 'one China' view, which many Canadians, actually can't agree with. It's a conservative government thing.((Don't look at me, I voted Liberal.))
However, Many people called Kosovo "Unique"... but Tibet is rather similar. It has a larger public knowledge base, but the support for Kosovo is there. Otherwise the UN wouldn't be there, trying to keep the peace.
CANADA/Quebec
Perhaps the reason Canada's stance on a 'one China' view is because they also want to keep a hand firmly on thier' french roots. Quebec's seperatist party has been chiming that it was "Today: Kosovo. Tomorrow: Quebec". While the Harper government declares that Kosovo was a unique occurence... I think the biggest difference between Serbia/Kosovo or China/Tibet and Canada/Quebec is that we don't need a squadron of 10's of thousands of troops armed with automatic machine guns keeping the peace in Quebec.((Quebec's police force is actually one of the most successful police forces in Canada, so they really don't need outside help on this.))
However, many acuse Harper's government of savage hypocracy. I'm one of them. How he can say "Congratulations Kosovo!" While turning a blind eye towards Tibet is beyond my logical grasp. It IS savage hypocracy.
