BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's top Sunni official has set a deadline of next week for pulling his entire bloc out of the government -- a potentially devastating blow to reconciliation efforts within Iraq. He also said he turned down an offer by President Bush to visit Washington until he can count more fully on U.S. help.
Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi made his comments in an interview with CNN. He said if key amendments to the Iraq Constitution are not made by May 15, he will step down and pull his 44 Sunni politicians out of the 275-member Iraqi parliament.
"If the constitution is not subject to major changes, definitely, I will tell my constituency frankly that I have made the mistake of my life when I put my endorsement to that national accord," he said. |

This just goes to show a serious error in our judgment with regards to the Iraqi government: A single, unified government cannot work. A three state, one country solution with democratic rule in each of those regions is necessary.
I'd support a Sunni state, a Shi'a state, and a Kurdish state, all democratic in nature, with Baghdad as the capital. A federal government would exist for matters of the military and internal security, international relations, and distribution of oil revenues, among other minor things that are important to the entire country. That way we can have democracy, which they do want (the three groups just don't like working together and sharing power), but it'd be divided in such a way to stem the ethnic strife as opposed to stimulate it through a unified government. I think this is the only real plausible political solution at this point, and God knows we need a political solution.

What kind of democracy is it when it's not okay to be of a certain mindset? I think this might prove that they don't really want a democracy. It's their country. If they want to divide it up, kill themselves, or be ruled under one government, then they need to decide and implement that themselves.
