Ok, so this is just a thought I had while reading another topic, but I didn't want to hijack it, so,
We have topics telling what we have for pets, but we don't mention why we give them the names we do. I thought it might be interesting to find out. But then again, I've been known to be wrong. So, yeah.
My two dogs are Molly and Noelle. Molly came with that name, my aunt gave her to me because her kids were abusing her. She has two more names because she's registered, again w/ the aunt, but I don't remember what they are. Noelle is because I have a slight fixation with Christmas,
Then I have Kaden, my cat. She was named after Kevin, Aaron and Dan. I don't know why; I'm weird?
My pets have always had different (odd) names, like Captain Blackie McShivers (another registered daschund), and Shena, KiKi, etc...

My kitty's name is Byez. He's with my dad, so I don't get to see him, but when dad moves I get to have him back, I think. Named him after the persona my cousin used to use when we were kids. It's also the name of some ancient emporer... and he shows it. He's bad.
My dog I may never get back from my mom, but her name is Felene, after Bamby's girlfriend. Fits her. She's adorable and she acts like a little dear part of the time.

Aw!
I've got three dogs at home, and one guinea pig.
The pig's name is Cracker, because she came with it
We've had Bing the longest, we got her from the pound and she came with her name.
Valentine we named because we got her on Valentines day (original, I know )
Doobie...I'm gonna pin that one on my dad
The big one is Bing, the little one is Val. I don't have a good pic of Doobie right now, but he's a beagle ^-^

I've got Louie, my pup. He is just named Louie b/c we thought it was cute, and fit him well - it does.
Then there's Lucy. Her full name is Lucy Belle. I liked the name Lucy, and Belle is after my fav disney character. My mom likes to say it's after Lucille Ball from "I Love Lucy". She can be a poop like that sometiems - causes trouble often.
Here are pics of my babies:
A very non-flattering pic of Lucy, but she is very happy when she gets to eat, so doesn't care what she looks like
my baby Lou smiling for the camera of course!

My dog's name is Penny because she is copper like a penny.
My blue fish has the name Caboose, cause he's stupid like Caboose from Red vs Blue.
My red fish has the name Kabuto, cause he's really fickle like the character Kabuto from Naruto.
My fiance's grey cat is Lumpy, cause when he sits down he's a lump.
My fiance's dark grey cat is Igor, cause he has eyes like Igor from the movies.

I had a pet zebra fish embryo once.
His name was Winchester Mascot Fieldings.
For the four hours that I knew him/her, I loved her.
So now I have no pets, unless you count Gregor, the vesuvian panda bear!

My hamster has no name yet (but his own website). I am considering to call him Wing after the Native American sleep-spirits.
Wings are quite small and usually hide under the bed. If you get close to a Wing's home or to the place where he hides, he'll jump onto your shoulder and hit you on the head with a tiny club until you can't keep your eyes open anymore and have to lie down.
So far my hamster doesn't use a club, but he sleeps 23/7 and hides under my bed whenever he gets a chance to.
However, Mr Hamster and I are open to suggestions Maybe you can come up with something that fits him better?

Nice. But the question posed was "why" did you give your pet the name it has.

Well... uhhh..alright.
I used to have a dog, who was female, named brittney... and I named her that because I have an ex-girlfriend named brittney...who bared a likeness to female dogs. Fitting? I thought so... but I had to give her up when I moved into an apartment.
Now I have a big orange fat cat named marmaduke, which is not what I would have named him. lol.
He's big...and fat... and goofy. He likes to eat flies.
I would have named him "Flytrap" or something like that.
