PostSun Feb 04, 2007 11:14 pm    Section 31

I have heard of this evil Federation group online several times but have only seen one episode with them (the one where bashir goes to romulus). How many episodes were they in and were they only on DS9?

Section 31 are not evil! They do the dirty work for the Federation behind the scenes. They do what it takes to ensure the survival of the Federation, even if it means bending a few rules (or breaking) in the process. They are the Federation version of the Romalan Tal Shiar, or the Cardassian Obsidian Order, though much more secretive and efficient.
They have only been in DS9 and a couple of episodes of Enterprise.

The episode you saw was "Inter Arma Silent Leges". Great episode. Luther Sloan rocks.

A couple other episodes I remember them in are "Inquisition" and "Extreme Measures." They were also a recurring part of the story line in season 7 for a little while towards the end.

I wish they would have brought them in more, its nice to see the darker side of humanity once in awhile rather than the saints the starfleet think they are.

Well, if you like those kinds of episodes, I've got one for you that shows the darker side of humanity, though, it doesn't have to do with S31. Trust me, its still an incredible episode.

"In the Pale Moonlight"

Good episode.

LF? Wasn't S31 orginally supposed to be part of that plot?

Is that the one where Sisko tries to trick the romulan and it fails?

I don't know, but, if you think about it, it would've made a lot more sense if S31 was involved in some way. Like in Hollow Men. I believe Sloan is involved in Hollow Men.

IMO, Section 31's heart is in the right place, their actions are just wrong.

They weren't referred to as Section 31 in Enterprise, since the Fed charter that presumably has a "section 31" in it hadn't been written yet, but it's clear that we're dealing with the same group. Are those episodes any good? Well maybe if you like later Enterprise. I don't like the series overall.

The obvious hasn't been said yet, which is that Section 31 was a comment on the CIA, and any other more secret organizations the US and other countries may have working for them.

It's also one of those many elements that were taken from Babylon 5. B5 had "Bureau 13", but only mentioned them briefly, and did little with the idea. The reversal of the numbers may be an attempt to acknowledge where they got the idea. Another interesting point: Bureau 13 operated out of the nuked ruins of San Diego. In Voyager, it was introduced that in the Star Trek universe, San Diego was also nuked by terrorists in the same way.

It is obvious that there are some...uncanny similiarities between DS9 and B5, however, the two are different shows and are both awesome. Don't forget, DS9 had the idea of a starship before B5, if that's anything. And, btw, Bureau 13 wasn't used except for that one episode because there happens to be a video game called Bureau 13 and when MJS heard of the game, he vowed never to use the name again.

I don't remember anything about San Diego being nuked in VOY...

S31 may be similar to the CIA, however, it is a bit different. S31 isn't sanctioned by the Federation nor is it spoken about openly. In America, the CIA is a household thing, just like the FBI, NSA, etc.

And, I've seen one of the S31 episodes of ENT and it isn't that bad. I'm reffering to Affliction.

S31 is more similar to the organizations which must be there but which we don't know about. When the CIA becane common knowledge the NSA was relied on for the more secret things, and now the NSA is known too, so that probably is not the most secret organization anymore.

I'm glad DS9 took so much from B5. We got two incredible SF programs out of it.
