I've already posted these questions on another forum, but I decided to try my luck with this one.
When, exactly, did the Federation sign their treaty with Cardassia? It could not have been in 2370, since Chakotay resigned from Starfleet and joined the Maquis in 2368. And when Picard was captured by the Cardassians in 2369 in "Chain of Command", he protested against his torture, stating that the Cardassians would be violating the treaty between the two powers.
Also, why did the Federation feel it was necessary to give their DMZ colonies to the Cardassians?

Well, its true they made peace then. However, I'm sure they're first treaty was during TNG.

It's interesting that in "The Jem'hadar", those soldiers questioned the Federation's treaty with Cardassia. Maybe they knew something Starfleet didn't.

The treaty was formed just before the start of the series, the reason why the withdrawed from Bajor, the reason the DMZ was created, the reason the Maquis was formed.

The only cardassian i like is garak, he is smarter and wiser than his entire race and has become respectable. As for the rest of the cardassians,( i dont like them), its sad it took destroying there population at the end of the war for them to be civilized and not a bunch of trouble-makers(they remind me of romulan back- stabbers), but you can bet when they get there society back up they will be at it again as always.

They signed a treaty with the cardies in TNG, and they switched alot of colonies, including Dorvan V (the american indian colony). They created the DMZ, and had very strict borders, with very strict monitoring of them. A very uneasy treaty, but a treaty none-the-less.

It was a given fact that even with the federation-cardassian treaty signed in 2367 (if that was the correct year) the federation was very sceptical about trusting the cardassians. The Cardassians were secretly deploying military supplies and secret installations which posed a threat to the federation borders and the maquis were trying to defend there home lands inside cardassian held space and asked for federation assistance which would have started a war anyway. It didnt seem like there was a treaty signed because it was just as unstable after the signing leading up to the dominion war involvement.
