Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:41 pm Calif. senator lashes out at Rice's personal life |
|
Quote: | White House Spokesman Blasts Sen. Boxer's Exchange With Secretary Rice
WASHINGTON The White House fired back Friday at Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer's verbal slap at Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, calling the California Democrat's caustic comments about Rice's family life "outrageous."

So, this is the bipartisanship Pelosi was talking about? Is this how the Democrats are going to run all these hearings and investigations?
What an idiot.

And we all know the Republicans were the nicest of people while in charge.
"So, this is the bipartisanship Pelosi was talking about?"
Yes, because Pelosi has mind control powers and can control what every Democratic senator and representative says.

They didn't attack someone for not having kids or being married.

I'll admit, what she said was very rude, however, you shouldn't be jumping to conclusions about the new Congress just yet. That was one person.

I jumped to conclusions on November 8th, 2006, and, while they have lessened in several respects, they're still there and are entirely founded. The Dems have thus far lived up to many of my expectations.

The Dems took power like...two weeks ago. Lighten up. It's not the end of the world. If the Republicans took over next time, I won't go crying about it. I'd accept it and move on.
In any case, yeah...because someone doesn't have kids or a spouse is no reason to call them out like that. The Dem. was in the wrong on that. Definitely.

Oh, I've accepted it and moved on beyond the election. It's over and done with and the Democrats are in power. But what's going on in Congress already isn't good. It's not as bad as I first thought, I'll admit, but still.
But okay, yes, getting back on topic...I agree. No one of any political affiliation should be treated like that in a hearing, or anywhere.

The Democratic party is not to blame for one senator's behaviour. The senator is to blame, as well as the constituents who saw fit to re-elect a politician who prefers to personally attack her opponents instead of furthering the well-being of the people whom she represents.
Oh wait, sorry, that's what a politician does. My mistake. I don't blame the constituents, as clearly they didn't have much of a choice except which party will be attacked.

O'Reilly's Talking Points memo on this was pretty good tonight.
Quote: | Sen. Barbara Boxer Attacks Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
By Bill O'Reilly
At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, the liberal senator from California who opposes the Iraq war said this to Secretary Rice:
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
SEN. BARBARA BOXER, D-CALIF.: Who pays the price? Who pays the price? I'm not going to pay a personal price. My kids are too old and my grandchild is too young. You're not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, with an immediate family.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
[...]
I mean, think about it: If you don't have a kid in the military, you can't make policy about war? I wonder what FDR and Abraham Lincoln would have thought about that.
But the far left doesn't care. All it wants to do is throw emotion at complicated problems.

Simply outrageous and disgusting. Thank goodness Rice maintained her usual high standard.
So, I'm already tired of the Democratic Congress. Let's go back to the good ol' days of Republican majority.
You know, I also want to say, God forbid anyone actually be asked to make sacrifices. I can't imagine how our country would have been able to get through WWII or something if it had happened been today.

I'm not sure how you get "do nothing" out of that statement.
But yes, I want the Republican party back in control. I'm already tired of listening to Democrats shove their negative fatalistic views down my throat, I don't want a minimum wage increase, I don't want Congress proposing funding to certain research projects, and I don't want Nancy Pelosi in control. That's what I was getting at...not "do nothing".

Democrats do the same thing to us, though. Last time I checked, Bush is one man, yet Dem. make sweeping indictments of all Rebublicans.
I think RM is simply holding the Left to the same standards they hold the Right.

Would it not be better to rise above such a level of pettiness instead of sinking to it? Not only would this allow for moral superiority, but perhaps it would even force the Democrats to rise to that same level, thus benefitting the political process, and the entire country, as a whole.
But I guess mudslinging is more fun.

I'm neither mudslinging nor holding the Left to the same phony "standard" they hold the Right. I'm only holding them accountable for what they've been preaching, that is all. And I'm going to be a solid watchdog throughout the next two years.

I wish that were the case. Politics is just so...dirty...
As for the topic itself, while I disagree with the senator's way of saying what she said, I understand what she was trying to say.
I don't think she was saying Condi can't handle the position, nor did she not know what is at stake.
I think she was trying to say that for people who have families, the stakes are higher and more personal.

...all of which is what you call a "Straw-person" argument and has absolutely nothing to do with running the country, or running it better. Personal attacks, or attacking a party/ideology will not get you anywhere, and this is why we still have major problems within and without the country that need to be resolved. If people would push past the us vs. them mentality, we might have some collaboration and perhaps viable solutions. However, that's being overly optimistic, considering that neither party can say it's truly reached across the aisle at this point.
And yes, "do-nothing" would be a good name for the last congress. They worked 97 days out of the year if I recall, correct me if I'm wrong. Something like that. They also played rubber stamp for the administration most of the time. Even though I don't like the democrats, I'm glad to see real argument within the government. Would be even better if it was productive argument.
