I wonder. If these positions are really so important, wouldn't he just fix the elections anyway? So either the people who are winning are secretly Ahmadinejad's allies, or else the positions aren't important. Which means that it isn't much trouble for him either way.

That's the ticket, what I bolded. Those positions really won't change anything because they really aren't important. The significance of this election, however, is not in the results so far as a change in the power structure, but rather the fact that it shows the shift of the Iranian people in favor of more moderate leadership and very much displays their distaste at the radicalization of their government, as embodied in Ahmedinejad.
