Should the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' be scrapped?
For the people who don't know what it is:
Quote: | "Don't Ask, Don't tell" is the common term for the U.S. military policy which implements Public Law 103-160, codified at 10 U.S.C. 654. The policy prohibits anyone who has sexual bodily contact with a person of the same sex from serving in the armed forces of the United States, and prohibits any homosexual or bisexual from disclosing his or her sexual orientation, or from speaking about any homosexual relationships, including marriages or other familial attributes, while serving in the United States armed forces. On the other hand, the policy requires that as long as gay or bisexual men and women in the military hide their sexual orientation, commanders will not try to investigate their sexuality. |

I don't see the point. These guys--and women--are in close quarters. Rumors are all over the place in barracks as to whether some person is gay or not. I think the person next to you in combat should be able to stomach your sexual orientation and work proffessionally with that knowledge. If they can't, they have other problems.

I think it should be scrapped. They use the same justification for this as they used for segregation. But our military is integrated... now

I've always found this slightly stupid. Chances are you've met at least one homosexual or bisexual person in your life, and if you can't handle it in general then you probably don't exactly fit into society in the first place, much less the United States military. Anywho, I don't see why it should matter.

I really don't care whether you allow openly gay people to support their country in the military or not. I don't have an opinion either way. I can understand both sides, but I don't really have an opinion.

Wow! no Opinion!
I fail to understand where sexual orientation has anything to do with someones combat abilities. Save for the bashers that thing they would be hounded, I dont know.... In short I think it shouldn't matter.

...and... what are the positives to making someone shut up or leave because of their personal preferences? I'm very surprised you don't have an opinion, RM. This is new.

Yes, no opinion. I really don't care either way I say if they want to fight and die for their country, that's fine by me, gay or not. But I'm not going to say they should lift the policy. I'm fine with them doing that, but I'm fine with them not doing it all the same.

Indeed I don't feel neither empathy nor antipathy, but rather apathy with regards to this issue.

I say that the act shouldn't be scrapped simply because I don't think someone should have to "declare" their sexual orientation when entering the military. You should, if you enter the military, be able to perform your duty regardless of what sexual orientation your commander/fellow officers take(s).

Well then you should want to have the act scrapped. If you don't have a problem with sexual orientation then the act should be scraped.
If the act was scrapped, people wouldn't have to say what their sexual orientation was and it wouldn't matter.

Scrap it.
I don't see what one's sexuality has to do with his/her ability to serve the military. Period.
It's a pointless, discriminatory policy, they should get rid of it.
I used to want to serve in the Air Force, but not if it means hiding who I am.

Should I follow the polls and go with the majority, or stay neutral? I don't know, but I think I'm going to stay neutral on this one
If they repeal it, fine by me. If they don't, fine by me.

RM is neutral on something ?! STOP THE PRESSES !
Anyway,
