Sun Oct 15, 2006 1:17 am Black Panthers reunite 40 years later |
|
Quote: | The Black Panther Party officially existed for just 16 years, but its reach has endured far longer.
Co-founder Bobby Seale never expected to be around to see that reach 40 years later.
"A lot of times I thought I would be dead," he says.
Seale and other former members will commemorate the party's founding when they reunite in Oakland this weekend. They plan a mix of events, including workshops on topics ranging from Hurricane Katrina to ethnic studies in higher education, as well as presentations on party history.
"Grass roots, community, programmatic organizing for the purpose of evolving political, electoral, community empowerment," Seale says. "This was my kind of revolution. This was what I was after." |

Wasn't this group pretty violent back in the 70's?

When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have

^ No, Malcom X was not a Black Panther--he founded the Nation of Islam. He wasn't even alive when the Panthers were founded, having been assassinated in Feb. '65.
But, yes, the Panthers were an armed revolutionary group. At the same time, they led the way on a lot of home-grown self-help programs in black communities around the country--clinics, literacy programs, free breakfasts for school children.
As with much throughout history, their legacy is mixed.

In forty years? No, thats a Misconception- Malik Zulu Shabazz, an American Lawyer and anti-semitic nutcase refounded the Black Panthers ages ago.
As for Malcolm X, no he was not a black panther neither did he found the Nation of Islam in the U.S, he was simply a member of it.
