He's talking about the ozon layer.
That treath never existed in the first place.

Yep, heres the news:
Quote: | Ozone hole stable, say scientists
Leading scientists in the United States say the hole in the ozone layer of the Earth's atmosphere above the Antarctic appears to have stopped widening.
The ozone layer blocks the Sun's ultra-violet rays, exposure to which is harmful to humans, animals and plants.
International agreements were reached to end the use of ozone-depleting chemicals called CFCs after the hole was discovered in 1986.

I remember being told about CFCs in infant school- that was 1989-1993.
I heard the hole was starting to close last year I think.

Yeah, but polution levels are rising.
The ozone layer has only been fixed because CFCs are pretty much illegal.

CFC's are what caused the hole, not co2.
Many HFC's have replaced CFC's which are not ozone depleting.

I know, I'm just worried that ignorant people will see this as another excuse not to care about the environment.

It stands for Chlorofluorocarbons.
Quote: | Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) are haloalkanes with both chlorine and fluorine. They were formerly used widely in industry, for example as refrigerants, propellants, and cleaning solvents. Their use has been generally prohibited by the Montreal Protocol, because of effects on the ozone layer (see ozone depletion). |

Sounds like good news. Not good enough tho. I think there is still a long way to go before the problem is sorted but its seems quite promising. There have been significant advances in both petrol and diesel engines here in Europe and wind turbines are becoming more and more of a common site over here.
However there is only so much Europe & the UK can do
I'd always thought there was more than one hole in the O-Zone layer...guess i was wrong lol.

The ozon layer sorted itself out, no human influence.

Yes, let's also laugh at the people who believe that it's man's fault that less than 20% of North America's forests remain....
Whether or not global warming exists, we are damaging the planet. Ancient trees in europe have been horribly damaged by acid rain, fish stocks are depleted, and many wild birds are becoming rarer and rarer. The evils of pesticides and herbicides poison the earth that feeds and clothes us.
If want to go ahead and continue abusing such a beautiful planet, sure, fine, go ahead. I can't stop you. You can only stop yourself. And you won't, just like all the others, because you like your way of living.

What we are doing is not damaging the planet. Nature can't be destroyed by its own creation(us). Sure Ancient forest go away but new ones will replace it, sure Species of Fish and birds disappear but others will replace it, sure perhaps in some strange twist the earth is warming up from global warming and at the same time cooling off for the next ice age, but thats defiintly not our doing and eventually its going to straighten itself out again, no damage done.
The only thing we need to do is prepare OURSELVES to survive it, not change the ecosystem or slow down the inevitable process of evolution.

Why do people keep putting the ozone layer hole and global warming together, there 2 completely separate things.
Its 100% clear the ozone hole was caused by humans because is opened when we started using CFCs and started closing when we stopped using them.

Actually, they are related. The "holes" talked about are not the only problem. Large areas of the ozone layer are thinner than they used to be, and this lets in more sunlight (especially the damaging parts of the spectrum). More sunlight equals higher temperatures (and other things, like more skin cancer).

Not correct. They are linked but not how you said:
Quote: | Does the Greenhouse effect cause the ozone hole?
The Greenhouse Effect (producing global warming) and ozone depletion are two separate problems, however there are links between them. Warming at the earth's surface is caused by certain gases in the atmosphere which can trap energy from the sun. An increase in the amount of these gases produces an increase in the surface temperature. The largest increase is in carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil, gas and forests, but other gases such as methane (from cattle and rice fields) play a part. A link with ozone depletion is that CFCs are gases which also contribute to greenhouse warming.
A further link is that although the Greenhouse Effect warms the surface, it allows the higher atmosphere, where ozone is present, to cool. This means that more stratospheric clouds may form and so make the ozone hole worse.
Even if the problem of ozone depletion is solved, global warming will still remain. It will cause a rise in sea-level and change the regions where crops can be grown. The issue will be harder to tackle than ozone depletion, but is one which concerns everyone on our planet. |
So technically if the ozone hole is getting bigger and more CFCs are in the atmosphere it would enhance the greenhouse effect. But if there is just a hole with no CFCs there would be no increase in temperatures. Just an increase in Ultraviolet radiation and therefore more skin cancer etc
