Does the federal government need to know whether you aced Aristotelian ethics but had to repeat introductory biology? Does it need to know your family's financial profile, how much aid you received and whether you took off a semester to help out at home?

Find the rest here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/21/AR2006072101396.html

I'm sorry, aren't republicans supposed to be for less government?

Why do we need some useless database that lets some know-nothing monkey in DC find out all my college information right down to my GPA and class grades? They have no right.

I hate to say it, but I think I have to agree with you on this one. This isn't something the government should do, but you know what? I hardly think Republicans are the ones who believe in less impact on the people by "big brother" government. It's more conservatives who believe in that nowadays, it seems, sadly; but of course, Bush isn't actually a conservative, so it's not a surprise that he and his administration would take such a stance--a stance that's even got liberals going against him.

The commission calls our nation's colleges and universities unaccountable, inefficient and inaccessible.

What?!

In response it seeks to institute collection of personal information designed to quantify our students' performance in college and in the workforce.

That's impossible. It's absolutly impossible to quanity a person's performance. That's what the SATs tried to do. There are too many variables in a human personality. That's why when you apply for anything you have a resume, references, a letter/essay, and an interview.

Privacy groups from both ends of the political spectrum -- including the Eagle Forum and the American Civil Liberties Union -- criticized an early form of the proposal that Education Department officials were exploring in 2004

I would see that as a very stong hint towards the govenrment that this isn't a good idea...

Supporters say it would make higher education more accountable and more affordable for students.

Wait...how? That makes no sense!

I find the whole thing shocking, stupid, immoral, intrusive, ineffective, disturbing, creepy, disquieting, unsettling, idiotic, senseless, and I am using a thesaurus to come up with more words
