How comes the ships are 'United Star Ship' (USS) but when the characters introduce themselves to an alien race it is "I am Captain X of the Federation Starship Whatever. Surely they should start having an FSS Enterprise! By the way, my latest polls seem to be picking Star Trek to pieces- I love it and I'm not trying to! Check out ST: Aeon in the Fan Fiction sector!

Yep, which is what USS means "United Star Ship"
or something similar
