Wed Jun 14, 2006 9:42 am Animals as Food |
|
Alright, thought to bring this up when i saw a aquarium full of Lobsters....
I have some point i wish to hear opinions about:
1. Animals as food, is it mandatory, delicious, sad, disgusting, evil?
2. Which animals are to eat and which not, is there anything in between or you simply don't know?
3. Boycott, is there any flesh you don't eat for a specific reason?
4. Human flesh, to eat or not to eat?
5. Morale, what is reasonable(or "Humane") and what is not?
Here is mine opinion:
1. I belive the fatc humans are omnivore that the consumption of Animals flesh is neccesary for our survival. Sure, as Huamn beings we can turn to other possibilities without problem but i think the consumption of actual flesh is not only healthy nutricion, it also keeps the Food chain in balance. I mean, what if we have no access to any plants and animals are our only choice?
2. I eat practically any mammal, Fish and bird. Usually the flesh itself, not any organs. However, I don't eat Insects or Amfibians and i have never had Reptile yet, but i will try.
3. I boycott certain dishes that involve the torture of animals to make the food more tasty or get more of the specific organ. For example Goose liver, in which they stuff the goose full of food with a Funnel so the liver would grow. Also i don't eat eggs that are proven have been laid by chickens that are put in little cages and never get outside. Lobster however isn't in my list, because as horrible as it sounds(boiled alive), i just can't feel anything for the little animal. Certainly if i would find out about certain animal torture around food i want to eat i won't eat it anymore.
4. I would never considder eating human flesh unless i have no choice. Not even if someone offered it to me and the Flesh is from a volunteer or something(the thought alone makes me feel sick). Don't get me wrong, humans are animals too, but they are our own species, and eating them just isn't right.
5. I believe some animals feel compassion, so certain animal are just not for eating in my book. like a dog for example, a dog is much more usefull as a pet and to die of old age then having lived only 3 years and then get killed because some people want to know how a dog tastes like. Not really my style of eating Flesh. Because certain animals can feel compassion towards humans i can't help but feel compassion towards those animals as well.

I'll just say this. I love meat. Burgers, hot dogs, steak. It's all in the beef. I see nothing wrong with eating animals as food, nothing at all.

It's delicious. I cannot live without meat. Kill the *beep* and eat them, I say!
2. Which animals are to eat and which not, is there anything in between or you simply don't know?
Eat what you think is good.
3. Boycott, is there any flesh you don't eat for a specific reason?
Well...No.
4. Human flesh, to eat or not to eat?
I wouldn't do it.
5. Morale, what is reasonable(or "Humane") and what is not?
EAT THEM. 'Nuff said.

I LOVE Animals, but hey, the animals we have as food are the type of animals that we don't normally have as pets. Like, we don't go around saying like "Oh i have a pet chicken" so it doesn't bother me.

Yeah, not in THIS country, but in others they do. For example, in America a dog is pet, but in eastern Asia, it's an entree.
In America, cows are burgers, but in India they are sacred animals.

Someone mentioned Lobster. Aside from the nasty taste, th fact its kept alive till boiling is why I do not eat it
Interesting Point, Andy

Personally, I'm a pesco-lacto-ovo-vegetarian. Meaning, I eat fish, drink milk and eat eggs but I don't eat any other animal "flesh" so to speak.

Well, I'm only a pesco-lacto-ovo-vegetarian right now because I can't afford to spend the time to be a complete vegetarian. But when I go back to college and stuff I basically become a complete vegetarian.
It's more because I lend myself to Zen Buddhism than anything else... and plus it's just so much more healthy

I don't really care as far as what meat I eat, I'll try it. I have a lot of vegetarian friends (at varying degrees of committment) and I can see where they're coming from.
Eating other humans for pleasure is pretty gross and morally disturbing, though.

1. Animals as food, is it mandatory, delicious, sad, disgusting, evil?
Delicious in most cases.
2. Which animals are to eat and which not, is there anything in between or you simply don't know?
As a general rule, anything but turkey or red fish I consider edible.
3. Boycott, is there any flesh you don't eat for a specific reason?
Damn those ugly turkeys!!! It's not like they taste good or anything, so let them live on with thier pitiful existance.
4. Human flesh, to eat or not to eat?
Ummm.... YUCK! Heck no.
5. Morale, what is reasonable(or "Humane") and what is not?
If you kill it, eat it. If you serve it for yourself, eat it. If you buy it at the grocery store, or, my preference, the butcher, eat it. It is inhumane to kill or purchase anything for the intent of eating it, and then decide not to.

I stick with the normal meats, such as beef, fish, turkey, chicken, pork...although I may venture from that every now and then. I think it is unhealthy to completly leave meat out of your daily diet though.

Well, just for example... my next door neighbor had to have major heart surgery, and they told her in order to live an active and healthy life after surgery, she would have to become a vegetarian. Plus the fact that excessive eating of red meat leds to colon, ovarian and cervical cancer, as well as an increased risk of breast cancer and, some studies state, throat cancer (though the later of which I'm not completely convinced of).
I, personally, just feel more energetic and healthier if I don't eat meat at all.

There are alternitives to get the nutirents you get from meats.
Z's right, many times when one gets sick and has to change what they eat, generally many kinds of meats are on the list of what you can no longer have.

Like Puck says, anything too much is not healthy for you. And sure, after a heart surgery its wise to put as little stress as possible on your heart.
But if you eat meat on a regular basis(once a week is enough) then no harm will come to you, its not any less healthy then eating potatoes.
At my home we eat meat every day, every kind too. my dad has had a Heart attack last year and received a stent but he can eat meat as much as he pleases. Of course too much wouldn't be wise.

I'll try just about anything and there is not much I hate eating. I like to combine meat and salad but only tend to eat in small quantities (shows why i'm skinny). I love atlantic salmon.
I might try human if it was possible. Would only try a very small amount though just to know what it tastes like.

People who have performed cannibalism for cultural reasons (not insane sickos) describe human as being very much like pork, but somewhat greasier.

I don't eat warm blooded animals (mammals and birds) but I do eat fish.
I never deny that meat is not a good, nutritious foodsource with many important and useful sources for the body. I do not see anything wrong with eating any species of animal (except human, because human stomach acid isn't supposed to eat human otherwise you'd eat yourself and it can give you brain damage)
What I think is wrong is the way animals are kept. It's disgusting. I'd rather we all went out with spears and ate deer and squirrels. Have you ever seen how chickens are reared for food? Do you know what get's pumped into those animals?
Animals should be kept in good conditions (or not at all). I hate the idea of things being bred to die.
Turkeys for christmas are fed so much that at harvesting time they are so fat they can't stand up. Friesan cows have been selectively bred for a meaty body so much that they have to be killed after just one or two pregnancies because their spindly legs can't cope.
What really pisses me off, is people who think it's wrong to teach children that the lamb they're petting down on the farm will be dinner in a month. You should teach children where their food comes from. How can you be grossed out by the slaughter of animals if you're planning to eat the animal yourself?
