TORONTO - Canada has long prided itself for opening its doors wider than any nation to immigrants and asylum-seekers, but that tradition is coming under intense scrutiny at home and across the U.S. border after the arrests of 17 men from Muslim immigrant families in an alleged terror plot.

Critics contend that too many newcomers are admitted without thorough screening, that asylum-seekers are routinely allowed to move about freely before their claims of persecution are reviewed, and that Canada's official policy of multiculturalism slows the assimilation of immigrant communities.

That's scary. I think lots more countries should adopt the more Australian style when it comes to immigration, and only accept people who are going to be useful to the country, like skilled workers.
It sounds like Canada just lets anyone wander in.

We have the same sort of system. We base our immigration on a points based on the applicants' attributes and abilities. You have to score a certain number of points to get your application approved.

That doesn't really apply to situations such as refugees.

I really don't like that. "Assimilation of immigrant communities." Firstly, assimilate them into what? "Canadian society"? There is no such thing. Canada is only what it is today because we have retained the cultural diversity brought to the country by its numerous ethnic groups. Nobody should have to "assimilate" into the mainstream in order to be excepted--Canada is not some sort of exclusive club.

Our security could of course be tightened--nothing is ever perfect, and as the CBC's Fifth Estate has shown, our airport security is quite horrific. However, I would prefer having an open immigration policy as opposed to some sort of restrictive policy, such as the ones in place in the early quarter of the 20th century during those other states of terror. :/ Of course being lax is a danger--but overreacting has shown time and again to be bad as well.

Michael Wilson, has proposed bringing a "myth-busting" delegation to Washington to counter them.

And a cultural relevance point for Mythbusters!
