PostFri May 12, 2006 8:16 pm    Query about Star Trek comics published by DC (1984-1996)

Is there anyone here who collected any of the Star Trek comics published by DC Comics from 1984-1996?

If so, please can you respond. I used to collect loads, but right now, I'm not sure where they are (a lot of stuff I've bought over the years is stored in boxes in various places in my home). There's just a couple of questions I have, regarding them. If you can't help, then I guess I'll just have to dig out those boxes.

Please only respond if you did collect the title (including the TNG comic which DC published). If anyone here has a few which they can look at, I just want to ask a few questions (in particular, I'm looking for the names of the editors of the various Trek comics, but I have other queries as well).

Thank you.

Hey

I `ve got some of the old Dc tng ones...at the moment ive got all from numbers 1-25,and then from 62-80(the last one in that DC run).Busy negotiating with someone who has the rest and that should go through in the next few weeks....but in the meanwhile if theres anything about those i can maybe help with, sure.Ive just paged through them really, having gotten it recently from a buddy but i really enjoyed what ive read so far.

(Now if only, just only i could find the Ds9 ones.I really.REALLY want those.I guess theres always Ebay but..im not in the mood to get a credit card and i doubt anyone would be willing to ship to me..im not exactly located in the first world.Meh,gotta scour some more dark comic shops around here.)

Btw here is a good link for the TNG collection,a checklist featuring basic synopsis, dates they were released and writer/artist names, should also help

First of all, thank you for the link.

I only have several dozen, but I still can't find them (I had another look today). I have three questions, regarding the comic books.

1.) What are the names of the editors over the 136 issues? I'm sure there were more than one, and I'd appreciate some names. I know Alan Gold edited the Original Series comic books for a while.

2.) What are the names of the editors for the TNG comics?

3.) What was the name of the letters pages for the Original Series and TNG comics?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I vaguely remember them. Was it Marvel or one of the independents that published them in the mid-90s? I only ever came across a few, and haven't seen them since whenever I've browsed comic book stores. I hope you are lucky in finding some issues.

I love the Trek comics. I think Gene Roddenberry allowed DC Comics quite a lot of freedom. Some licensed characters in comic books aren't allowed to develop much. I mean, some studios just wouldn't allow it. However, I think Gene Roddenberry allowed the comics quite a lot of creative freedom, and hopefully I'll be able to find those issues.

Marvel also published some Trek comics in the late 70s/early 80s, but in my opinion, Paramount didn't allow Marvel to have much creative freedom. I did enjoy the Trek comics published by Gold Key Comics in the late 60s/early 70s. If you ever come across them, I'd recommend them.

Thanks again for your reply.

Hey again

Ok,about the questions, sorry, flipping through a few issues....refreshing memory again ( got them recently so i dont have these things
memorized :p)

1) Well,from what i can tell,the first issues (from 1-25
wich i got) for the DC TNG run,the Editor was Robert
Greenberger. And then from 62-80 ones wich i got the
Editor was Margeret clark.I`ll have to wait till i get
the others to see if there was someone in between
though.Dont have TOS ones though,

2) Hmmm, from details at the back, for the TNG 1-80 DC run
the editors and high level staff guys and girls were
(just copying what it says at the back on the letters
page,for a later issue 62)

Jenette Kahn president & editor in chief
Paul Levitz Executive VP & Publisher
Margeret Clark Editor
Joe Orlando VP Creative Director
Tom Ballou VP advertising
Bruce Bristow VP Sales & marketing
Patrick Caldon VP Finance & operations
Terri Cunningham Managing editor
Chantal D`Aulnis VP business affairs
Lillian Laserson VP & general counsel
Seymour Miles VP assosiate Publisher
Bob Rozakis Executive Director Production

And then for the first and such issues...1 and so
on...the staff were

Jenette Kahn president & editor in chief
Dick Giordano VP Editorial
Robert greenberger Editor
Richard Brining Design Director
Terri Cunningham Managing Editor
Bob Rozakis Production Director
Paul Levitz Executive VP & Publisher
Joe orlando VP Creative Director
Bruce Bristow VP Sales & Marketing
Matt Ragone Circulation Director
Tom Ballou Advertising director
Pat Caldon Vp & controller

3) I unfortunately dont have any TOS ones (except a
graphic novel floating around somewhere) but for the DC
TNG ones the letters page was called "Starfleet
confidential"

Dunno if that was much help, let me know if theres anything else .i really love the comics too, from the few ive had time to read so far the artwork is good though it varies from early to late(some of it looks a bit different but i cant even draw a stickman so im the last to judge),and the stories are nice,i mean,im not that emotional in general ,but one or two frames in some stories had me close to tears .And yeah i agree with the freedom,a lot of the aliens and stuff in there could never have featured in the live action shows with budget constraints.

The ds9 ones i`m looking for are by Malibu comics..theres probably a marvel or DC few too somewhere but i just go by plots and i feel some of these would make real good reads...although like the other series one you get the odd "huh ?!" one, like the one with the....deadly mold or somesuch.
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/star-trek/comics-checklist/part5/ for details .You guys in the States and UK are much luckier finding these things though

Thank you very much for answering the questions. I couldn't remember the editor's names or the titles of the letters pages.

Oh yes, it was Malibu. I caught about two issues around 1994. Since that point, I haven't seen it in any comic book store, or elsewhere. Maybe they were so popular that people just snapped them up, or maybe they didn't print that many.

The history of Trek in comics is very interesting, but confusing with the license having been given to so many different companies over time. Gold Key Comics were the first to print Trek comic books, then it was Marvel, then it was DC, then it was Malibu, and then Marvel reacquired the license, before it drifted away to Wildstorm whose license expired in 2002. Confusing, eh? Some consistency would be nice. I can't comment on Malibu, but I think Gold Key Comics and DC served the interests of Trek fans the best. In my opinion, Marvel didn't always have the best relationship with Paramount - that was a shame as Marvel did produce some good titles like Starfleet Academy.

Anyway, maybe one day another company will acquire the license. With the talent we have out there, it'd be a shame not to. I think there are many writers who could do a good job with Trek and it'd be nice if we saw an Enterprise comic in the future.

Thanks again for posting the information.

Just came across whilst googling wich might be a handy link ,showing the exact numbers of released comics by each publisher and links to the covers and such....perfect to admire or,if your me,cry at the ds9 ones and the lack of being able to find them. I think it was a case of yeah, your right, from searching they got good reviews so either they were too popular and snapped up,or underprinted .

Ive never heard of Gold key before but im not a big collector,so not too clued up, nor was i a big comic reader...just a few marvel, and DC and Dark horse ones here and there (the Star wars ones are nice by the latter) but ive started again recently as i got a real annoying reading problem thats developed and atm i find them the easiest to read other than trek novels...and the most entertaining.

Also, have you seen the Mad magazine Star trek spoofs ? I loved those . I know the former probably doesnt qualify as a real comic but...still.Also its interesting to see how the artwork changes over time and the comic contents. From issue 1 and compare issue 80 wich almost has more gaming ads than comic pages.

As for the companies ,Marvel and such`s relationship with paramount,i guess Activision had the same thing when it came to gaming. They wanted to be more creative than paramount itself was being,i guess.*shrug*

Good luck in any future comic collectors hunts

Thank you. And thank you for that link. I didn't think there were any websites for Star Trek comics, as my searches often proved fruitless, so I am very grateful. And I'm glad to see that I was right and that Wildstorm had published Trek for a short period.

There was also a Star Trek strip published in TV21, a British title which contained strips based on many Gerry Anderson shows and programmes such as The Champions and Land of the Giants. Since it's obvious to me that you appreciate comic book Trek, I'd recommend that if you come across any Trek comics, buy them. Depending on your personal budget, I'd go for Gold Key or DC first. Marvel would be a last resort, in my opinion, due to the fact that Paramount didn't allow them much creative freedom.

I keep hearing that about Paramount. Some studios are like that. I wish they'd realize that by allowing creative freedom, it would result in better stories. If Marvel had had the creative freedom that, say, DC had enjoyed, I might remember the Marvel Trek comics as fondly as Gold Key and DC.

I saw some years ago. Do you mean more recent ones?

Keep checking Ebay for those DS9 issues. Do a search every day. As a person who likes comic books and often buys them off Ebay, I know that you can do search after search, day after day, without any luck, but then you'll log on one morning or evening and you'll find what you're looking for. Be persistent, my friend.
