PostMon Feb 27, 2006 11:45 am    "Star Trek: The Beginning" Script Scrapped

The latest issue of Dreamwatch magazine, just out in the UK, reports that Doug Mirabello, personal assistant to Rick Berman, has made a post at The Awful Forums which pretty much denies all recent rumours about Star Trek XI, and says there isn't likely to be any new Star Trek in theatres or on Television for quite some time.

Mirabello reported that the Erik Jendresen Star Trek: The Beginning script had been scrapped.

He also says that, to his knowledge, there are no plans for using Patrick Stewart in any forthcoming TNG movie project. "It's more likely that some executive had a casual conversation with him and brought up some hypotheticals which he ran with when some reporter asked him about Star Trek... [But] there's a chance that someone else at Paramount is planning something huge and keeping us out of the loop. From what I've heard, Patrick wouldn't do another Trek movie unless they paid him Professor X (X-Men) money..."

Mirabello was also more than happy to talk about some of the problems which had plagued Enterprise.

Read the complete report at TrekWeb.

I wonder why they scrapped the Jendresen script? Hmm, will have to research this further.

It is sad. It may have been scraped on part of trying to stay away from a prequeal idea... from what I hear, this guy is talanted...

There have probably been dozens of scrapped scripts for movies that never happened. The reason this one got so much publicity was because there is no Trek on TV anymore. I do agree that Trek is in a slump, but it has always had slumps. When Voyager was canceled, it was like the last of the great series was over. ENT didn't help the naysayers. But everything has had its ups and downs, and Trek will recover.

I hope you're right. Yes, it tends to be that, after downtime, a series is brought back up, even years after. Just look at Star Wars with the Special Edition trilogy released in theatres in the mid-late 90's. My expectation is that, in the next few years, a new movie will be made. Trek will recover, but I hope that when it does it's not a failure, like Enterprise, that will bring it down again.
What we really need is another Roddenberry to take over...
I say Founder should come up with a series or movie idea (after his brilliance with DSG) and him, Exalya, myself, Dan, and Lord Borg should all write the script. It would be great!

There's a reason why I said Founder should come up with it. I didn't say you. Don't take credit where credit isn't do!

After TOS ended, fans waited for 11 years before a crappy movie came out. After the Motion Picture, Star Trek movie plans were almost scrapped. Paramonut Execs games them one last try to make a smash hit Trek movie. And that last chance turned out to be the greatest Trek movie ever, and started a golden age of Trek. If our fans can perservere for over a decade for another series, I think we can wait for a while longer, so another show and movie come out.

Yeah, and it HAS been nearly 4 years since ST: X....

So we've waited some time for another movie....I think it's about time for either a new movie or series....

And yes, ENT was on the air in the interim after Nemesis, but......it HAS been canceled...............so there are no current Trek shows in production.

Trek has HAD it's time off....break time is over, IMO.

There are some awesome directors out there that are talented enough to come up with an awesome and well-made film. I have faith in the Trek franchise....and CBS.

CBS needs to take a chance and hire James Cameron to direct the next movie. lots of people would see it.

I hate to burst your bubble, it's just barely been 3 years since the movie came out...(It did come out December 2002, right? Just wanting to make sure I don't look stupid... )

I think the prequel idea that was Star Wars came up with was an idea that quickly became over used. The Western concept of time is for it to move forward, an occasional exception to that norm is really cool. It became bothersome, however, when many francises started going back to the past. In the case of Star Trek, it was unwise because of the vast difference between 1960s television effects and present-day television effects. For Star Wars, it kind of worked because late 1970s theatrical effects were not so strikingly different from the effects used in the new movies.

Star Trek had always been a foward looking francise, so they should have stayed with that idea, and perhaps also waited a few years before coming out with a new series. Personally, I think Voyager could easily have been stretched out a couple more years... look at Stargate...

Voyager could have been brought to a more gradual halt... perhaps showing us a little of what actually happened when they got back (though they did leave a nice set up for a movie), then wound down the show. Waited a bit, perhaps putting out another movie after LOTR finished, then started a new show.

I don't care about them doing a "pre-quel" to TOS because of the special effects. That's not the problem. The PROBLEM is the fact that they're screwing up the Trek timeline and adding crap in there that wasn't really there...They need to stick either with specific references, like the "Eugenics Wars" or the "Romulan Wars" and whatnot... Otherwise just continue to move forward and NOT NOT NOT backward.

I love Star Trek but I really want another series. A good series. But now I think that maybe the franchise has reached its limit. I dunno, this is what I read recently from IGN.

Star Trek Omega - "Continuum"
Admiral Picard sends Captain William Riker and Commander Thomas Eugene Paris on a mission whose success has unknowingly caused serious repercussions on an event occurring within the Q Continuum, and in conjunction with all the temporal damage done by al the Trek crews over time, bringing about a Quantum Quake, leaving behind a force that begins to undo all existence. Anything and everything including the Continuum is in jeopardy, as the "big-bang" is being undone, and Time unravels and ALL the Trek crews, from Enterprise to Voyager, from Zephram Cochrane to Daniels from the 31st Century Federation, The Klingons, The Romulans, Tholians, Gorn, Vulcans, Ferengi, Hirogen, Xindi, Orions, Krennim, Dominion and the Borg must come together with the help of the Continuum, to stop the catastrophe before all the multiverse, indeed all existence (the Continuum included) is negated.

Yeah, there's a link from that article MakeItSo posted about it. He advertised for a Kirk-Spock academy series or film of some sort.
Anyways, as much as I actually want to say "Trek's over; let's face the facts and move on," I'm not so sure. Maybe Berman's denying it, but I think there's definitely something in the works for Trek for sure. I'm not going to say it's over until the fat lady sings, 'cause it isn't going to be.

Oh, check out this IGN article as well: http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/699/699491p1.html

Quote:
Although no new Trek film has been announced following the apparent failures of Nemesis and Enterprise, Berman has been involved with a potential prequel film that had Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers) writing a screenplay. Meanwhile, Patrick Stewart revealed on two occasions that Paramount was considering a film that would mix cast members from The Next Generation and recent films with those from other Star Trek series (perhaps both DS9 and Voyager). Stewart himself would get to play Captain Picard again, if he wanted to although at this point, he doesn't.

That would be interesting...

Ya, but how much weight does it actually carry? I mean, anybody can post what they want...can post what they want the hollywood people to say, but if it's not true, then it's not true...

I won't believe it until I see it coming from a reliable source...

Unless, that is a reliable source and I just don't know it...LOL...but still...I'm VERY skeptical...

You forgot to put this in your post, Republican...LOL...this is an important piece of info...

Quote:
Rick Berman, Trek's current head honcho, is not privy to whatever conversations Stewart has taken part in. "I have no idea what that's all about," he told the aforementioned magazine. "I've read that [Stewart] says he's open to doing another movie and then I've read he's said 'I'm too old to do another movie.' So I have no idea what that is. And anything I'd say to speculate would be silly."

Sorry, if this is considered a double post, but it wouldn't bear much weight if I posted in the post above...
